How will the Libraries conduct strategic planning?

By Mike Furlough, associate dean for Research and Scholarly Communications

During 2013/14, all Penn State University colleges, campuses and other major units will be developing a five year strategic plan for the years 2014-2019. Dean Dewey has asked that I lead the development of our strategic plan, so I’d like quickly outline the process and likely schedule. The University’s instructions for strategic planning can be found online on the Dean’s Office Intranet . The plan is due July 1, 2014.

Strategic planning offers us an opportunity to collectively imagine the future of the Univeristy Libraries and our role at Penn State. The last few years have resulted in enormous changes at the University, but it is likely that things will be even more different in five years. As we develop our plan, we should be thinking even further out. What are the “grand challenges” we will face in ten years?

  • How will our students be learning?
  • How will researchers discover information?
  • How will our graduates live?
  • How will our citizenry participate in a global society?
  • What must we do in the next five years to prepare for that future?

How to disable iOS 7 from zooming in and out

By Ryan Johnson, technology training coordinator

ios 7 logoIn the most recent update to iOS 7, Apple made it possible to stop applications from zooming in and out when you open them. The effect was causing some to suffer from motion sickness and vertigo.

To disable this feature follow the instructions below:

1. First, install the latest iOS7 software update by going to Settings -> General, then Software Update. If you haven’t updated already, you should see a little notification on your Settings icon, prompting you to update.

2. After you’ve updated, go to Settings -> General, then Accessibility. There, you’ll find Reduce Motion. Select Reduce Motion and then swipe the switch to the right so it turns green.

This “feature” will then be disabled!
