Exhibit focuses on Evan Pugh, Penn State’s first President

“No Nobler Effort: Evan Pugh, Penn State’s First President” is on display from January 28 to June 10, 2014, in Robb Hall Exhibit Gallery, Hintz Alumni Center. The exhibit takes a closer look at the remarkable life and achievements of Pugh, a leader and advocate for public higher education, whose life was cut short by typhoid fever at the age of 36.

Pugh was an intellectual giant from Chester County, Pa. who completed his Ph.D. in 1856 and joined the Rothamsted Agricultural Research Station, in England, where his research won him membership to the prestigious London Chemical Society in 1859.

In October 1859, at age 31, Pugh left England to serve as the President of the Farmers’ High School (now Penn State) in Centre County. His goal was to educate new generations of agricultural scientists and conduct practical research in support of American farmers. He was president, teacher, researcher, registrar, bursar, construction superintendent, curriculum organizer, promoter, lobbyist, disciplinarian and procurer of supplies. In 1861, the school produced the nations first graduates (11 students) with a degree in scientific agriculture.

Filter items in your UCS account using tags

By Ryan Johnson, technology training coordinator

filter tagsTags can be your key to creating your own personal classification system in UCS. You can create custom tags and then apply them to any item(s) in your UCS account, such as emails, contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, and briefcase items.

Clicking on any given tag will sort your account based on that tag, only returning items with that tag. For example, you can create a tag called Follow-up, use it to tag emails in your inbox that you need to follow up on, then click the Follow-up tag in the Overview pane to only display items that have been tagged as Follow-up.

For more information on tagging, please view the web-based tutorial Using Tags to Classify Emails, Contacts, Appointments, Tasks, and Briefcase Items.

January Strategic Planning update

This year, all colleges and units of the University are working on a five-year strategic plan for 2014-2019, to be submitted by July 1. Over the last few weeks the Libraries Strategic Planning Steering Committee has been working on two things:.

1. a framework to guide the further development of the Libraries five-year plan for 2014-19

2. appointing working groups to carry out deeper discussions of the libraries strategic directions.

There is a complete update on the framework and the working groups at the Libraries Strategic Planning site, where you can also comment and ask questions about the process. — Mike Furlough

Penn State’s University Libraries have acquired the archives of the renowned designer and writer Chip Kidd. Kidd, dubbed the “the closest thing to a rock star in graphic design” by USA Today, studied graphic design at Penn State before starting work at Alfred A. Knopf in 1986. At Knopf he has created memorable book jackets for authors such as John Updike and Michael Crichton, including the iconic cover for “Jurassic Park” (pictured left). Kidd is the recipient of the National Design Award for Communications (presented by the Cooper-Hewitt/Smithsonian) and will receive the AIGA medal for lifetime achievement in April.

Kidd is also the author of several books, including “The Cheese Monkeys” and “The Learners,” both fictional accounts of his time at Penn State, as well as an original graphic novel, “Batman: Death by Design.” He has also authored several books about comics, most notably “Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz,” “The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross” and “Bat-Manga: The Secret History of Batman in Japan,” among many others. His most recent work is the highly acclaimed “Go: A Kidd’s Guide to Graphic Design.” Continue reading

Penn State’s participation in Access Pennsylvania

By Barbara Coopey, assistant head of Access Services

Access PA recently completed a catalog reload of our holdings in the Access PA database. More than a decade ago Penn State joined Access Pennsylvania and added our holdings to their database. There were yearly holdings updates until 2008 when at that time Access Pennsylvania no longer was able to process the updates. Since then, the database has been lacking accurate Penn State holdings.

During Fall Semester 2013 Access Pennsylvania did a reload of our holdings and deleted our old records. Thanks to the efforts of Maryam Kutchemeshgi of I-Tech and E-ZBorrow Expert Team members Shane Burris, Barbara Coopey, Amy Miller, Trish Notartomas, Barb Woods, and Fay Youngmark, our holdings records were examined and the size of the files sent to Access PA were reduced to make the reload easier.
