Program recounts story of a Few Good Women

“Telling the Story of a Few Good Women,” a talk by Lee Stout, will be presented on Thursday March 26, in the Downsbrough Community Room of Schlow Centre Region Library, 21 S. Allen St. A light supper will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by the presentation, which will end by 7:30 p.m. Please RSVP by March 23, to Christine Bishop at cbishop@ccysb.com.

Stout, Librarian Emeritus, Penn State’s University Libraries, is the author of “A Simple Matter of Justice,” a book based on an oral history project created by Barbara Franklin and the Penn State University Archives that recorded interviews with more than fifty of the women and men who participated in an extraordinary undertaking, beginning in 1971. Stout, the initiator of the project, will recount the history of the recruitment project, tell some of the stories of these “few good women” and assess the impact and the lessons we have learned from this pioneering effort.

The program, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) State College, Penn State’s University Libraries and Penn State student groups, including AAUW of Penn State and Women in Business.

Non-Person accounts in Box now have 1TB of space

By Ryan Johnson, technology training coordinator

boxLast week Box at Penn State increased the quota for Non-Person accounts to 1TB of space, this is an increase from 300GB. Non-Person accounts similar to department PASS or Roo Space and are great for department storage space or for committee work that can be accessed from anywhere.

The main advantage of this type of Box account is that files no longer need redistributed to other people when someone leaves the unit. The co-owner of the Non-Person Account merely needs to remove the departing employee from collaboration on the account. Files are “owned” by the Non-Person account.

If you are interested in requesting a Non-Person Account from Box, please visit the following page for more information.

Seeking your photos for National Library Week

National Library Week, April 12-18, 2015, is a time to celebrate our libraries and library employees—in other words, all of us and the work we do! To help celebrate, we have planned a number of activities.

First, University Libraries will invite our users and visitors to comment via Twitter. The comments will be displayed on the Libraries’ home page all week and will also be aggregated on the Libraries’ social media page at http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/social.html. Don’t worry if you have never tweeted—we will offer Twitter training during the latter part of March.

All week, photos of staff, faculty and library spaces will be displayed on the Libraries’ web page carousel. To help us build that display, we are inviting you—photographers-at-large at all library locations—to submit photos to be included. We especially want to see “action” shots of library personnel “getting the job done,” individual shots or group photos will also be included. Please select your favorite 1-2 shots to submit to us. Photos of building facades, front doors or other interesting architectural and space details will be considered. If you are at UP and are unable to capture your unit or library in a photo, get in touch with Ann Snowman or Dace Freivalds to coordinate a photographer.

Please submit your photos to: Melody Gehlbach at mkg13@psu.edu before March 9, 2015.

This is an initiative of the Library Management Council. — Ann Snowman and Dace Freivalds
