Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award winner Engle to speak Sept. 20

promotional graphic for September 20 Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award presentation

Margarita Engle, 2016 winner of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, will receive the national children’s poetry honor at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library, University Park. Following the award presentation, Engle will speak about her writing, specifically the use of historical works to communicate with children, and show photos from Cuba to illustrate scenes from her winning verse memoir, “Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings.” The event also includes a book sale and author signing.

A Cuban-American author, Engle wrote “Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings” about growing up as a child of two cultures during the Cold War. Published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing, her book was released the same week the U.S. Embassy in Havana reopened after more than a half-century of hostile relations between the two nations.

Inside Access: Faculty/staff office delivery update

by Carolyn Muse, Interlibrary Loan

This year begins the fourth year of Interlibrary Loan’s Faculty/Staff Delivery Service. Since Trends in Faculty/Staff Office Delivery Service was published in the February 8 Library News, the statistics for the 2015-2016 academic/fiscal year have been completed and compiled.

  • From 2013-2014 to 2014-2015, there was a 52% patron number increase and a 31% increase in all materials sent (32% increase in “I Want Its,” 17% increase in E-Z Borrow, and 26% increase in ILL Borrowing materials).
  • From 2014-2015 to 2015-2016, there was a 22% patron number increase and a 15% increase in all materials sent (15% increase in “I Want Its,” 28% increase in E-Z Borrow, and 2% increase in ILL Borrowing materials).
  • As of June 30, 2016, there are more than 620 patrons actively using the service. An average of 125 items are checked out and mailed each week.

The continued success of this service is attributed to Interlibrary Loan’s steadfast commitment to supplying materials in a timely manner, overwhelmingly positive feedback from our current patrons, sustained word-of-mouth between departments and periodic,strategic advertising. Interlibrary Loan will begin another round of advertising at the beginning of Fall Semester by placing bookmarks detailing our service to patrons who have not yet signed up.

Librarian role added to Canvas to support research and instruction

A new role is being added to Canvas today (Sept. 6) that enables Penn State instructors to add University librarians into their class. This role is especially helpful in courses that require external research beyond information that is provided in the course.

The librarian can:

  • participate in a discussion board dedicated to research and information questions;
  • create videos for inclusion in the course;
  • participate in collaborative videos with the faculty member;
  • communicate with students about their research needs and hold research consultations; and
  • provide an embedded presence of the library in courses.

Additional options are available depending on program needs.

This role is in addition to the new Library Resources section recently added to Canvas that connects students and faculty to course e-reserves and online library guides in support of research available for specific courses and also available by subject.

Faculty who are interested in utilizing a librarian in their courses can contact the library at onlinelibrarian@psu.edu to discuss their needs.

Open House event at University Park to offer fun, tour, prizes Sept. 7-8

close-up image of t-shirt design with periodic table elements spelling out P.S.U. Libraries

Students who complete all 11 stops on the Open House tour earn a PSU Libraries periodic table shirt, while supplies last.

Open House at University Park — scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 7-8 — is a fun, interactive, informative event held in Pattee Library and Paterno Library and all four branch library locations across campus. More than 3,500 students are expected to participate and learn more about the academic and leisure resources and services available through the University Libraries. The 15th annual fall event includes a self-guided tour, presentations, activities, giveaways and the opportunity to win prizes.

Penn State I.D. cards are required for students to participate in a self-guided tour of stations highlighting locations and services within the Libraries. The full tour includes 11 stops — seven in Pattee and Paterno Libraries — and one stop each at the Arts and Architecture Library, 111 Stuckeman Family Building; Earth and Mineral Sciences Library, 105 Deike Building; Engineering Library, 325 Hammond Building; and Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library, 201 Davey Lab.

University Libraries administrators, faculty and staff volunteer at the two-day event to help students as they learn more about the resources available to them both on site and online. One of the largest and most successful library orientation programs of its kind nationwide, the Penn State Libraries’ open house event began in 2001. In previous years, more than 95 percent of students participating in the open house said the event helped them to learn more about the Libraries’ many resources and physical spaces and recommend the open house event to other students.

The complete news article about the University Libraries’ Open House event at University Park can be viewed here.

Tech Tip: Check your voicemail online

by Ryan Johnson, I-Tech
from a Tech Tip that originally appeared on June 26, 2015

Did you know you can listen to and manage your voice messages online? Faculty and staff who use the University’s Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) voicemail system can access and listen to their messages through a secure online voicemail inbox. The service also enables employees to sign up to receive instant email notifications when they have a new voicemail message on their desk phone.

To enable this service, you must navigate to https://voip.psu.edu and authenticate (if necessary). Then navigate to the New Voicemail Notification tab and select Notifications of new voicemail will be sent to your e-mail address @psu.edu.

New voicemail notification setting options can be changed at this menu.

You then will be able to log into https://voip.psu.edu and play any new message from the website itself from your inbox:

You will also receive an email in your inbox (see below) that will also allow you to direct your inbox at the VoIP website to listen to the message.

An email will arrive in your inbox if you have set voicemail notifications.
