October is United Way Kick-off Month

By Heather  Ross

October is the Kick-off for the Centre County United Way campaign. The Libraries United Way Committee has lots of events coming up in the next few months to raise money for the campaign.

What does the Centre County United Way do?

They work with partner agencies to establish the needs of our community and then works with the community to meet those needs through fundraising and volunteers.

What are our needs in Centre County?

The Centre County United Way has three main goals:
1. Education (Early intervention services, child care, libraries, literacy, after school programs, etc.)
2. Financial Stability (food bank, housing, living expenses, etc.)
3. Health (counseling, medical and dental, hospice, etc.)

I already give directly to a charity.

Great!  We don’t want to stop you from doing that, but here are the benefits of donating through the United Way. United Way knows more than me about what the community’s needs.
Low cost of raising funds through the use of volunteers, so more money goes to the people who need it. United Way can distribute my dollars, with other combined donations, to
impact a greater number of viable needs. Most people who are getting assistance from one agency typically need more help.  Donating to the United Way means you can help that same person over several agencies.

I want to choose where my money goes.  Can I do that?

YES! You can choose to donate to 4 individual agencies OR choose to not donate to
an agency. Unspecified donations are best, but it’s up to you.

Who uses funds raised through the United Way?

Chances are you do and don’t even know it!
• Centre County Library
• American Red Cross
• Many more!
