The idea of cloud gaming has been there for a long time. It was such a great idea that many huge tech companies and game company seemed to have a consensus that this would be the future of the game industry. And many of them have started developing such a platform ever since a couple of years ago, including Sony and Microsoft.
I didn’t expect that the new technology would come so quickly, but let’s just talk about it today.
Generally, I am really excited about this new platform. One of the major advantages of this platform is that people can have access to triple-A
games at any device instead of the immobile gaming console and costly high-performance PC.
I used to have struggled about this when I consider which laptop should I purchase a few years ago. I was a gamer, so I think I need a powerful PC. Also, I don’t think I am not one of those super fit people who can carry a 10-pound laptop all day, so it should not be too heavy. Oh and the battery life. My high school only have very few sockets, and they are always occupied, which means long enough battery life can help me use it all day long without spending too much time looking for sockets. Then I looked at the price and gave up the idea. Now I have a MacBook Air.
The truth is, until now, a truly mobile(with acceptable weight and battery life for over 8 hours) that are powerful enough to run triple-A game is still quite expensive, and many people always sacrifice the computing power in exchange of mobility. Now, I would say Stadia provide one of the best solutions to such an issue.
It was also great news to the game developer. Since many people are not such a huge fan of a video game, they end up buying an ultrabook, or even their old desktop. However, if they are able to play triple-A games by cloud gaming, more people would have access to these video games, and game company can, therefore, getting more profit.
Moreover, It will benefit those hardcore gamer who would like to pay any price to have the best gaming experience. In order to sell games, the game company needs to make sure that most of their potential customer has a machine that can run their games. Sometimes they may even lower the quality of picture or reduce the number of NPC to make a compromise with people’s not great PC. Nevertheless, the emergence of cloud gaming platform will remove such compromise, and hardcore gamers can spend less money and enjoy a better video game.
Overall, it was a great technology, but it’s still a little bit far from us, and I don’t think Google would be the winner in cloud gaming. Google doesn’t have its game studio, but Microsoft and Sony do, this is one of the most important competitive edges in cloud gaming. And the reason I said it was a bit far from us is that cloud gaming is a kind of competitive field, and it could take longer to reach an equilibrium where people can enjoy cloud gaming with good enough service and data centers to support large scale cloud gaming.
