Hey future Nittany Lions! My name is Julie and I am a current senior kinesiology major. I am also a Penn State Fitness Instructor, which means I have the privilege of sharing my knowledge of the human body through teaching group fitness classes to students, faculty, and community members. Many patrons are often concerned with maintaining their health, especially freshmen still adjusting to college life where there are daily all you can eat buffets and (for most) no more daily after school sports practices keeping them active. If this is a concern for you as you consider Penn State – do not worry! The Active Times ranked Penn State the 5th Fittest College Campus in August 2014. This impressive ranking is a result of the many options Penn State offers in the gym, dining halls, and all over campus! Here are some key options to utilize when trying to stay active and healthy on campus:
- Try a Fitness Class
Take 45 minutes to have some fun and work up a sweat! Every week there are over 200 fitness classes going on around campus. Class locations and times vary daily, as well as class types. From yoga and pilates to boot camp and interval training to cycling and kickboxing and more – there’s something for everyone.
- Check Out the Gyms
There are four on campus gyms: Hepper Fitness Center in Rec Hall, White Building, and closest to East Halls (home to many freshmen) are the Intramural Building and McCoy Natatorium. If you like to go when they aren’t too crowded, download the PSU Strength and Fitness App to see the real time occupancy of each facility!
- Make Your Own Active Lifestyle
If working out isn’t for you, Penn State offers many daily active choices to stay moving. Try simple choices such as taking the stairs up to your room or walking to class instead of taking the bus. On the weekends try hiking Mount Nittany or walk around downtown with your friends. Penn State is a big place – use that to your benefit!
- Join an Intramural Team
Get a group of friends on your floor together and sign up for an IM sport. Almost every sport imaginable has an intramural season. This includes soccer, volleyball, flag football, wrestling, basketball, swimming, tennis, softball, golf, squash, racquetball, dodgeball, track and field, badminton, and even table tennis. No skill or prior experience is needed, but if you win the playoffs your whole team gets the infamous IM champion shirts.
- Check Dining Hall Nutrition Info
All of the dining halls provide each meal’s nutrition facts online and on the Dining@PSU App. Check over what is being offered before making your choice and read over the nutrition facts. Make good choices – eat good, feel good!
As an incoming freshman, know that there are a wide variety of options for everyone to stay healthy and happy at Penn State. Choose what you love and try something new – that’s what college is all about!
