Whether you already know that Penn State is where you belong or you are still considering your options, it is never too early to start looking at housing and roommate possibilities. With Penn State being such a large university, consisting of over 40,000 undergrads, there are various choices pertaining to where to live. There is East, West, North, South and of course Pollock. East is typically the area of choice since it is the sole place on campus where only freshmen reside.
Once you have narrowed down your choices on geographic area, it is time to start that elusive roommate hunt. This is where things start to seem overwhelming, but it is important to know that you do have options! The best place to start the search would be on Facebook. Simply search Penn State Class of 2019, and you will find a group consisting of perspective students just like you. It is important to remember that everyone in this group is in the same boat; they are an incoming freshmen who are looking for a roommate or even just someone to call a friend. Reach out to as many people as possible, you never know who could be your new BFF, roommate, or even both. I found my summer and freshman roommate through this medium and met some other interesting people in the process as well, so take full advantage.

If searching through social media seems a little too risky, don’t worry. Many people find their freshman roommates through friends or acquaintances. Start asking around, everyone knows someone who plans on attending Penn State. This option also makes the possibility of meeting up even easier since you have someone to vouch for the individual. I have had a few friends who said they met their roommate through a friend of a friend and they could not have been happier, hence another option possibly worth trying.
One final option is a bold one, go random! It is important to bring up that at Penn State, there is no questionnaire to fill out so it really is random. This method is great for people who are coming to college looking to branch out and meet a diverse group of new individuals. Rather than sticking with the same people you would normally hang out with, your comfort zone, this will expose you to fellow Nittany Lions who also left their roommate selection to chance. I have personally heard of many success stories with this method so why not give it a shot!
Look out for my post next Thursday, which will be all about what to look for in a freshmen roommate!
