The “freshman 15” is something that haunts freshmen all over the country and I’m here to tell you that the legend is REAL. Like most incoming freshmen, before coming to college I had heard about people gaining a lot of weight their first year and assumed that wouldn’t happen to me. Boy was I wrong! What I hadn’t taken into consideration was that eating unhealthy was actually a lot easier when you live in a college dorm. As a current junior, I’m here to give you some great tips that would have definitely helped me eat healthier my freshman year!
- STOCK UP YOUR MINI FRIDGE. Stocking your mini fridge with healthy snacks like fruits and veggies and keeping sweets away from the fridge will help your life because whenever you are hungry in your room your only option will be to eat a healthy snack since you probably want to avoid trekking all the way to the dinning halls.
- STAY ACTIVE. I’ve noticed that a big part of the weight gain has to do with the lack of high school athletics. A lot of us were in some kind of sports team in high school that required going to practice and exercising. Coming here, unless you are a student athlete, most people rely on just going to the gym for a little while or doing nothing at all. Which is why I recommend joining an IM sports team. IM teams are a fun way to stay in shape because they have practices and games, like high school athletics.
- STAY AWAY FROM THE PIZZA (or in PSU’s case POKEY) PARTIES. There is no easier way to attract people to come to your events than by offering free food, which PSU is very big on. Going to these events is always a fun way to get involved and meet new people, but eat a healthy meal before you go that way you don’t indulge in pizza heaven.
- MAKE IT A TEAM EFFORT. Whether it’s getting a few gym buddies or making a pact to keep eating healthy with a friend, having people help you always makes things easier.
- TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DINING HALLS. Most dining halls do offer healthy options, which obviously don’t look as good as the creamery ice cream, but sticking to those will keep you healthy! Looking back I wish I stuck to the usual “chicken breast and broccoli” instead of enjoying way too many bowls of cookie dough ice cream.
I hope these tips help you stay healthy and avoid the freshman fifteen! Check out the rest of the blog for some more insight into our world here at PSU!
