Apple released the first ever IPhone in 2007, which was the same year members of the next Penn State college freshman class were 8 years old. Fast-forward to today and 70% of college students use their phones to help them stay productive everyday, according to a survey on mobile device usage.
Keeping up with which apps are the best can be difficult when there are thousands of new ones released every single day. Here is a list of (free) apps that I believe to be very helpful for Penn State and other college students alike:
This app is probably the most popular Penn State app amongst students. For those who have a meal plan, Dining@PSU allows you to view a map of all the dining hall locations, see what is cooking at each location and check on the nutritional values of everything served on campus.
KNOT Maps
This app is one of my absolute favorites. A friend showed it to me in the beginning of freshman year when I was having trouble find my way around campus. The creators of the app describe it as a “fully interactive mobile experience for your favorite malls, universities, and more.” And luckily for us, they have a map of University Park! Just plug in the name of your on campus location, and the map will direct you there.
Penn State Strength & Fitness
This app is designed for those who love their big school, but hate the long lines. Any gym goer will agree that once and awhile you will go to the gym and find a line for the fitness center. With this app, you will know how long the lines are at the 3 major gyms on campus and you’ll spend more time working out and less time standing around.
College Confidential
Where can you find the latest information on how to get into college, how to pay for college, how to choose a college and much more? College Confidential of course! This website is loaded with great information from discussion boards to vibes on campuses. And what is even better is the luxury you have with the website as an app!
CATA
Don’t feel like walking to your class on the other side of campus? Don’t worry, the CATA bus and CATA app have you covered. The app gives you a minute-to-minute update on exactly how far away each bus is from your exact location. Say goodbye to standing in the freezing weather waiting for a bus!
Evernote
Evernote is the ultimate note-taking app. For those who love organization and versatility along with modern technology, this is the app for you. The app allows you to take notes, take pictures and record sound. And if you’re not a huge fan of taking notes on your phone, the app also has a version for all you IPad users. The best of both worlds.
