Welcome to State College, where you could be walking to class in -6 degrees with a wind chill of -16 degrees. But don’t let the winter weather get you bummed, because there are a few tips and tricks to get you through the winter smoothly.
One of the cheapest ways to adjust to the plunging temperature outside is to layer up. By adding more clothes to underneath your coat, it is like having a whole new outfit but with the same coat. For the really cold days, try to add wool or fleece to your outer layer to optimize your warmth on your walk to class.
2. Tissues are your new best friends
When you’re walking 15 minutes to class through the wind, your eyes will water up and your nose will start to run. To prevent having to sniffle through your whole class, have a handy pack of tissues in your coat or backpack. Three packs of tissues can be bought for $3 at a convenient store, and they come in cute patterns.
3. Warm drinks = warm, happy hands
This may seem like a no brainier, but you will be surprised at how much warmer you hands feel from carrying a hot coffee or tea on your way to class. Plus, you’ll get to sip on your drink of choice as you delight in the warmth of your classroom.
4. The thicker the sock, the better
If you only own low cut ankle socks I would change that, immediately. The ankles are the most underrated part of our body when it comes to preparing to go outside in the cold weather. Indulge in buying thick, high socks that cover your ankles completely. And for the really bad days, don’t be afraid to double up on the socks, you won’t regret it.
5. Beware: ice patches ahead
The day after a snowstorm leads to the inevitable, ice patches on the sidewalks. Be prepared by wearing sensible shoes, such as snow boots, rain boots or any other shoes with good traction and walk slower than usual. Save yourself the embarrassment of falling on your butt in front of your peers and be prepared for the worst! Which leads me to my final tip…
6. Be prepared for the worst!
From December through March almost anything could happen with our weather so you want to be prepared. Always check the weather for the day before going outside, wear an extra layer to be safe, keep yourself healthy and try to enjoy the beautiful Penn State winter!
