Training Requirements

All training must take place in the NLR/NLC program office, at the placement site, or via a Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count-sponsored offering. Mentors will receive the predesignated credit hours; however, they are only paid for the amount of time it takes to complete the training.

New mentors are required to complete a minimum of six hours of start-up training including:

  1. Information Security Awareness – .5 hour
  2. Current year’s Building a Safe Penn State: Reporting Child Abuse completion certificate – 1 hour
  3. Understanding Title IX: Sexual Misconduct completion certificate – 1 hour
  4. Current year’s Annual Compliance Training completion certificate – .5 hour
  5. Additional training based on level of experience and placement site

Each academic year following, mentors are required to accumulate a minimum of six hours of training including:

  1. Current year’s Building a Safe Penn State: Reporting Child Abuse completion certificate – 1.5 hours
  2. Current year’s Annual Compliance Training completion certificate – .5 hour
  3. 4 hours or more additional training based on level of experience and placement site

Training offered through a community partner should be communicated to the program coordinator so that mentors can be credited accordingly. These hours, with the exception of training related to Mandated Reporter, will count toward the six-hour requirement.

Specific placement opportunities may require additional trainings.  More information will be made available during your placement meeting with the program coordinator.
