The first time I ever dyed my hair was when I was 7 years old. My brother had asked my mom of she could color his hair red, and of course, I said yes when my mom offered to dye a strip of my hair.
That first red strip was just the beginning. I absolutely love having unique hair colors because its literally having someone’s artwork on your head. Even better, my cousin, Leo Wolters Tejera at WT Hair (yes, this is a shameless plug) had , started a career that fueled my addiction. And now, I can get my hair done by someone I trust whenever I want.
I think everyone has thought about dying their hair before, and I am here to encourage you. Yes, do it. Why? Well, hair grows back. If you dont like it, then wait a bit and dye it back.
More importantly, find a professional that knows YOUR hair profile or is at least willing to learn. I’m Filipino, so while I look like Im white, my hair texture would tell you otherwise. I have very curly, semi-coarse, sometimes unmanageable hair. Some people don’t know how to care for it, properly cut it, or how to color it, but they would do it anyway.
So, what I’m trying to say is… if you choose to color your hair, please find someone who actually cares about retaining its healthiness after its done.
If they are actually a professional, they will tell you whether or not your hair can take the damage and come back from it. They will tell you if their not knowledgeable enough with your hair texture to cut and color it. Etc.
And I cannot tell you how many times someone has seen my hair and said, “I could never do that I’m too scared.” Or, “how do you pull off all these colors.” Want to know the answer?
I don’t. I don’t choose a color wondering if I’ll look good because as long as I’m happy, I don’t care who likes it. For example, someone told me they didn’t think I would look good with blonde hair. So, last year, Leo pulled off a miracle and transitioned my hair from vibrant pink to a beautiful blonde. And I got many compliments, but even if I didn’t, it wouldn’t bother me.
So, if you’re scared of dying your hair, do it anyways. It’s fun and unique, and it may even make you feel more like you. It’ll boost your confidence and make you feel carefree. So, why not?
The only trade-off is that you have to be willing to maintain it if you want it to last. Many of my friends don’t listen to that part of my advice, but you should. If you aren’t willing to take care of it, you might as well throw your money away.
Dyed hair is easy to care for, as long as you’re not willing to cut corners. So, my friend, do your research. Pick a color, and have the guts to confidently walk out of a salon with some vibrant hair.
It’ll be fun, I promise. (:
