As important as maintaining good physical health is for our bodies, mental health is just as important, if not more important. Mental health looks different for everybody. For me personally, I promote good mental health by engaging in self care activities and maintaining a positive mindset. When I am not feeling my best, I will make sure to take time to read, relax, and talk to loved ones. Writing my thoughts down in a journal has also proved to aid in my self reflection and mental health. Furthermore, I try to approach each day with a positive outlook, and I remind myself that today is a good day.
Why Mental Health is Important
The term mental health encompasses our psychological, mental, and social well being. In turn, our mental health affects all aspects of our lives including the thoughts and feelings we have and how we act. Furthermore, our mental health is the foundation for how we will approach day-to-day tasks such as interacting with others and responding to stressful situations. According to the CDC, mental health is just as important as physical health because poor mental health can lead to long lasting conditions or health problems.
Ways to Improve Mental Health
According to The Mental Health Foundation, there are various easy strategies to follow in order to maintain and improve mental health.
- Lean on others: talk with people you trust and feel comfortable with about your feelings, keep in touch with people you care about either face-to-face or over the phone, and ask for help if you become too overwhelmed to handle things on your own.
- Engage in positive activities: do activities that you love and that you are good at, and regularly exercise! Exercise is good for sleep, self confidence, and keeping your brain and body healthy.
- Nourish your body: eat well since a good diet is beneficial for both your physical and mental health, and limit your consumption of alcohol.
