Ideas for the Semester

A “This I Believe” statement that stands out within my life is the impact a family member can have on your growth. Both of my parents have affected me in intense ways, but of the opposite nature. For my podcast, I was hoping to address the differences with my relationships with each parent. Although that may be a lot to cover in one podcast, I was thinking I could either speak about my father or my mother, or even combined the two in a compact way.

For my passion blog, I really enjoyed writing about social issues last semester so I was hoping to draw along the lines of that. But seeing as we have a Civic life blog, I feel like I could write my passion blog on something else. Something that I have found myself having interest in lately is skiing, as the winter season has been primal. I want to speak about all the mountains I have skied at or ones I hope to visit sometime. I think it would be a fun way to cover the ten passion blogs.

Drawing from my passion blog from last semester, I have been thinking a lot about the incarceration rates within the U.S. today. Along with those rates, I want to address racial issues within the incarcerated community. I think both of these ideas would be very interesting to talk about, but also be informative about rooted issues within America’s civic life.

  1. That’s such an interesting podcast idea, definitely be careful with how much that is to cover though, but I think you could do a really good job with it!
I love skiing! I was just in Breckenridge over break so I’d love to hear about some other recommendations.
I really like the incarceration topic, there’s so much to discuss and it’s so interesting. The U.S. definitely has a problem concerning this in my opinion.

  2. I like that you wanted to include your family into your ‘This I Believe’ project, because family is a large force in shaping our beliefs. It would be interesting how your familial background shaped your beliefs! I would be really interested to read about what you enjoyed and didn’t enjoy about skiing on the mountains that you’ve been to and the little things you appreciated from nature at these locations! Personally, I have never been skiing, so it would be interesting to read about it from someone else.

  3. Having done my passion blog on something similar last semester (scuba instead of skiing), I can speak from experience in saying that it is a great way to finish the blogs up in an efficient, fun, and well-written way. That sounds like a perfect choice for a lighter-hearted passion blog to end the year on. Your civic life blog, too, is a perfect choice, as it focuses on a hot-button issue that isn’t likely to be covered by many other students in the class. And your podcast, despite leading in with a bit too much material for a three-minute presentation, sounds interesting and relatable. It’ll be intriguing to see where that topic ends up taking you.
