The Big Three of Banff

Unfortunately and somewhat sadly, I have only ever skied in New England. Don’t get me wrong, I love New England, and I love skiing. But, the mountains and snow fall don’t compare to the conditions out west. A dream of mine is to ski at Banff National Park in Canada. With three major mountains; Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Norquay, you will have a winter experience like no other.

Banff Sunshine is incomparable. With an average snowfall of 30 feet and a late closing date of May 20th, you will definitely never have a dull moment, and you will be able to take advantage of the long winter season. The mountain gets so much snow that it doesn’t even need to make its own. To me, it sounds like a dream come true, as conditions are almost always perfect. Fresh powder is always available at Banff Sunshine, as inches poor down on the mountain almost everyday. Not only would the skiing be awesome, but adventures in the beautiful landscape will make this spot a perfect vacation.

Lake Louise has more advanced trails, so I hope to someday visit and ski the fresh powder of Banff. With a 3,250ft vertical, downhill skiing is expected. With some of the highest peaks in the Rocky’s, Lake Louise has beautiful views of ice glaciers. I can only imagine what it would feel like to be skiing on an open powdered trail, mountains of white only on site. I would love an open run with little traffic, as in New England mountains there are almost always large groups also skiing down with you. Sometimes I just want an open run and my own space! With powder covered advanced runs, it seems like it would be any skiers paradise, but especially mine.

Last but not least, Norquay is famous for being the training ground for Olympic and World Cup competitors. With great snow conditions and being just ten minutes from the town, Norquay is a local gem. With vast terrain and options for beginners and advanced skiers, it’s a great place for a family vacation. It even has night skiing, with a lit terrain park available to those who are training. For me, I would love the opportunity for night skiing, as most New England mountains do not offer that option. I have skied at night in Sunday River, but only limited trails were open. I think Norquay would be a fun night time ski experience.

In my lifetime, I will be vacationing in Banff. With great terrain, a cute downtown, and beautiful glacier views, Banff is basically “goals” for any skier. I hope to experience the fresh powder and downhill slopes that Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Norquay has to offer. I have only ever heard amazing things and I think Banff would be an experience like no other.

  1. It’s great that you set a goal in skiing to be able to ski at this mountain! I hope that you will have much more fun skiing on really snowy slopes that might challenge you as a skier.

  2. My roommate and I have always talked about how amazing it would be to go to Banff. We have a friend from Canada who said that Banff truly is just as beautiful as people say. Although I am not a skier, I would love to go. The night skiing sounds especially cool! I hope you get the chance to go there someday!

  3. Wow, Banff looks absolutely gorgeous and 30 feet of snowfall, that’s ridiculous! I can’t imagine skiing until May, you could go after the semester is over (that’s crazy). When you go one day, maybe revive your passion blog and post some pictures.

  4. I have always wanted to ski out West, not even Colorado just Utah. I have always wanted to ski in Utah but my dad always told me I was not good enough to ski out west LMAO

  5. My cousin is Canadian so I’ve only heard great things from him about Banff. If you ever do go you should definitely visit Moraine Lake, or at least look up pictures for now – it’s so beautiful!
