(G)I-dle x NXDE

(G)I-dle is a South Korean girl group comprising five members: Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi and Shuhua. The group was formed in 2018 under Cube Entertainment. As all K-pop bands do after they debut, the band soon revealed their fandom name, NEVERLAND. The fandom name is related to Neverland where Peter Pan and the Lost Boys reside which is a place where people never change and live as children forever. This means that (G)I-DLE will live together with the fans without changing and will stay together for a long time.

The group has made history in many ways and continues to do so the older the band gets. They are recognized as a self-producing idol group, breaking stereotypes of female idols with their colorful voices and unique concepts. Not only do they stand out from other girl groups by creating their music, but they also have a unique vibe and characteristics that are different from the standard girl K-pop group. Instead of being cute, (G)I-dle is bold and sensual. They explore numerous genres and themes in their songs from the objectification of women, the exploitation of idols by their companies, to the fear of growing up. Some of their most famous songs include LATATA, Senorita, Queencard, Tomboy, and my favorite song of theirs, Nxde. Nxde

Nxde is by far my favorite song of theirs because it has such a captivating alluring sound to it while simultaneously having a beautiful meaning. As said in Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Best Songs of 2022,” one would expect a song called “Nude” to be sexy and sultry, but (G)I-dle redefined the word to emphasize being one’s truest, barest self. From the intricate music video to the layered lyrics, the song addresses the objectification of women. It shows/tells the audience that women are more than just a pretty face and body for one to fawn over.

A particular part of the music video that has a very impactful message is when Soyeon, the leader and producer of the group, is in a box in an extravagantly expensive dress with people around her bidding on her. It is symbolic of how others often try to determine the worth of others. It is symbolic of how people only look at what’s on the outside and base beauty on that, while no one cares for the person inside.

Through this song, Soyeon is trying to bring her message to life by creating music that sends messages and challenges the way society thinks.

I highly recommend watching the music video and seeing the message of the song come to life. From the melody taken from the 1875 opera Carmen to the many references to Marilyn Monroe, it is an amazing video and has a powerful message that society can learn from.

  1. Wow! I’ve never heard of this band before, but I loved reading what you had to say about them. I definitely need to take a listen. Also, it’s super cool that their fandom is called Neverland; I love anything that brings a sense of some childhood wonder and nostalgia.

  2. This seems like a very interesting music group that could be interesting to explore the meaning behind their band, which you did explain very well. This song is really unique in that it strays away from the cultural norm associated with its name and focuses on authenticity which is needed for people these days.

  3. You did a great job of explaining the band’s meaning, which makes for an intriguing listen. This sounds like a highly unique musical ensemble. Because it deviates from the social standard implied by its name and emphasizes authenticity—a quality that people these days really need—this song is truly unique.
