CI #5

Since the next presidential’s are coming around the corner, I thought it would be suitable to discuss the issue of voting among minorities.

There are many reasons as to why people do not vote, maybe they are busy, forget to register in that state, or simply do not feel very much in favor for a particular candidate, the reasons are endless. However, while there are many reasons as to why people do not vote, there is one common theme… lack of hope.

“President Obama’s high votes were likely due to his turnout among unlikely voters, especially those who are young, minority, and poor. This is because voting is an expression of hope, as well as a belief that a citizen’s input and participation into the system will yield social change.”

“Or viewing it from another perspective, politicians rarely offer disillusioned citizens reasons for optimism. Lacking hope, those voters don’t show up at the polls because they believe nothing politicians say or do makes life better for them.”

“Civic engagement—best exemplified by voting—depends upon an engaged and informed citizenry. But in America, it’s hard to be a good citizen if you’re poor, ignored, or vilified. Life is just too hard to worry about lofty issues such as public policies and partisan political intrigue.”

I personally agree with all of these statements. I especially think that it is important to try and motivate members of the younger generation, especially those of minority cultures/ethnicities to vote. I wonder tho, why is there a lack of hope for members of young minority groups? Some would say because police brutality, but I personally think that the answer is more complex than just police brutality. There can be many reasons as to why there is may be a lack of hope, instead of trying to figure out the different causes of lack of hope, it is more important to find a way to help raise hope in young minority individuals.

If people of the younger generation and of minority cultures are not voting, then they’re voices are not being heard. In addition, it is important to get them to vote because who knows better than them what its like to be a member of that community and what needs to be done to help make it better for everyone.
