RCL #4

The organization that I chose was NRLC.org. This organization is the nation’s oldest and largest pro-life organization, founded in 1968. The organization works through legislation and education to protect human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia. I chose this organization because I am pro-choice, and I actively oppose this organization’s goals.

One of the logical appeals that I found on the web site was the argument, “When Does Life Begin?” They argue that “The life of a baby begins long before he or she is born. A new individual human being begins at fertilization, when the sperm and ovum meet to form a single cell.  If the baby’s life is not interrupted, he or she will someday become an adult man or woman.” This is often a argument that Pro-life believers use against Pro-choice believers. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it is my understanding that under the law, the fetus is not regarded as having its own “life” until it is separate from its mother. I think the argument of When does life begin is not a good one, since it is mostly left up to an individual’s own opinion.

Another one of their arguments that I observed was with the picture below stating, “When you think Planned Parenthood, think Abortion.” This is one argument that is just completely false. This argument is attempting to use ethos by attaching the “reputable” name of the organization with this false statement in the hopes that other individuals will start to believe the same thing. This is a false statement because Planned Parenthood a nonprofit organization that does research into and gives advice on contraception, family planning, and reproductive problems; it does not  have anything to do operating abortions, they simply educate individuals of all the possibilities that are to their disposal.

The last of their agreements is, ” Assisted suicide, especially for those who are terminally ill, is not good due to circumventing the dying process.” Those five stages being Denial and isolation, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and  Acceptance. This information about the process has been praised and criticized by grief experts. It is somewhat like the debate of global warming that we are dealing with today in that context. Most psychiatrists believe that the stages are too rigid and that they should be evaluated due to the date that they were developed (1969) and the fact that so much has changed in the discipline of  psychiatry since then.
