2016 was a pretty competitive year in the gaming market, with lots of high-profile games released during the year, such as Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 from EA, and the new Blood and Wine DLC for The Witcher 3, which won the 2015 TGA Game of the Year. Microsoft Studios released Forza Horizon 3. Ubisoft also released Rainbow Six. Siege. These games are still going strong today, eight years later, but they all lost to Overwatch, which is pretty unusual for a game to get a perfect score from IGN, which is proof of how influential and playable this game is.
Overwatch is a first-person shooter game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Overwatch is a bit different from the other games we’ve talked about. It’s not so much about the plot as it is about creating a multiplayer competitive game that offers players something new and lets them really get into it. The game Overwatch is set in a futuristic version of Earth. It tells the story of the feuds between humans, members of Overwatch, and intelligent machines. Each hero has their own iconic weapons and skills. The main thing that sets Overwatch apart from other shooting games is that it combines weapons and characters in a unique way. In most FPS games, you can change your character by changing your weapons. For example, a sniper rifle makes you a sniper, a rifle allows you to charge head-on, and a shotgun makes you a melee fighter. Put simply, it has transformed the ‘weapon-oriented’ nature of traditional FPS games into a ‘hero-oriented’ one, which is one of the hallmarks of its MOBA-style gameplay.
The game is a team-based first-person shooter set in an era full of strife, where the heroes are thrust into the action. There are two types of game missions. One is called ‘escort’, where the attacking team has to get the target to the right place safely, while the defending team has to stop them until the end of the time. The other type of mission is called ‘occupation’. This is where both teams fight for control of the map. One team attacks and the other defends. The aim for the attacking team is to capture the key markers, while the defending team must maintain control until the end of the time limit.
Overwatch has had a big impact on the gaming industry. As a multiplayer online game, it’s always been about the team. The word from Blizzard is that they’re planning to tone down the killing aspect of the game. It’s not even possible to check your own KD value visually; you have to calculate it yourself by averaging the number of kills and deaths. This is a pretty tough setting compared to traditional FPS games that focus on individual levels and individual contributions. Secondly, Blizzard has made sure the game is a good length. Other multiplayer games often last half an hour to an hour, but each game of Overwatch lasts an average of only 10 minutes. This makes it more suitable for most players of all ages, who can play Overwatch.
Overall, in 2016, an exciting year for games, Overwatch has set a precedent in terms of game classification. Rather than making an even more exciting and detailed game within the original game genre, Blizzard chose to do something different and create a product that stands out from the crowd and gives players a better experience in terms of playability.

I can’t believe Overwatch came out so long ago. I remember playing when it first came out and I never realized how impactful it was to the gaming industry but thinking back now it’s pretty clear how revolutionary it was and the impact it’s had on games like Valorant. What do you think about Overwatch 2? Also it’s strange that Overwatch with it’s initial high ratings in 2016 is now less popular than of the other games you mentioned like Rainbow Siege Six.

I learned a lot about Overwatch from reading your post! I’ve heard about it but never actually played. It’s cool how the game combines different elements to make it stand out from others. Do you think that most people would find the game interesting and playable, or is it more geared towards a specific audience?
