God of War

There was a pretty dramatic scene at the TGA 2018 awards ceremony. The same game won four different awards, including Best Game Performance, Best Game Plot, Best Game Soundtrack and Original Sound, and Best Sound Effect Design. The awards started rolling in as soon as the ceremony began, and Red Dead Redemption 2 ended up being the game with the most TGA 2018 awards. Rockstar Games has created a virtual society with a consistent and coherent internal operating logic, meticulous attention to detail, rich game content, and a touching story. This allows people to immerse themselves for weeks, months, or even years. IGN gave the game a perfect 10 upon release, and it’s considered the best large-scale open-world game to date, as well as one of the best games of the contemporary era. Given how well it was made, you’d think it would be a shoo-in for best game of the year. But that’s not what happened. God of War 4, released by Sony, beat it to the title. How does God of War stack up against it? What did it do to make players think it deserved the award? It’s got to show up in the details.

God of War is a third-person action-adventure game developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica Studio and released for the PS4 on 20 April 2018, and for PC on 14 January 2022. This game is the traditional follow-up to God of War 3, and it has a different setting than the previous game, which featured Greek gods. The story follows Kratos, who lives outside the influence of the gods, as he embarks on a new journey in the unfamiliar Nordic land. He’ll go on adventures with his son Atreus, travel through the wild Nordic landscape, and fight his way through to achieve a goal close to his heart. The game was nominated for several game awards straight after its release, including TGA 2018 Game of the Year, IGN 2018 Game of the Year, and D.I.C.E Game of the Year.

The God of War series is a well-established IP that first launched in 2005. If it sticks to the same format, it’ll quickly become outdated. In recent years, as functions and hardware have improved and players’ expectations of the gaming experience have changed, many old game series have started to innovate in new ways. The leaders among them include “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” which organically combines traditional puzzles. The God of War series, which was born on the PlayStation 2 platform, has also ushered in a completely innovative sequel after 13 years. The new God of War has a different setting, Norse mythology, and a different game mode, ARPG. The battle is in a shoulder view perspective, the Chaos Twin Blades are now the Leviathan Axe, and Kratos is less violent and overbearing. These changes might make some players wonder if this is still the God of War they know and love, sending adrenaline soaring and pursuing the ultimate in violence. Once you get into the game, though, you’ll see that all these changes have made it a better gaming experience. I should also mention that the new God of War is really well optimised, and the graphics performance is basically as good as they say it is. God of War 4 isn’t just an action game – it’s got adventure and exploration too. Exploration isn’t just a decorative element in this game; it’s a significant part of the gameplay. In most scenes, exploration is the main gameplay, while combat is a way to take a break after a while. Compared to the complex and brain-burning puzzles in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the puzzles in God of War 4 are just right. They’re not too difficult, but they require a little brain power, which makes God of War 4 a fast-paced game.

What most people are really impressed by is how well God of War 4 gets immersive gameplay. The game’s unique cinematic narrative features dynamic camera tracking, giving players the feeling of watching a Norse mythology movie. One-shot continuous shooting is the most representative feature of this game, and it’s become pretty well-known along with the battle plot. I think it’s fair to say that performance is the most important part of this game, and it’s present throughout. It’s great how smooth and natural it is to do things like open treasure chests and row boats. It’s really impressive how much effort has gone into making this game run so well. There are no loading screens in the game. All cutscenes and battles are calculated in real time and seamlessly switched between. Performance is so important that it even comes before combat. That’s why the game uses a rarely seen over-the-shoulder perspective in action games. It sacrifices some of the combat experience, but it ensures that the performance is top-notch. Another thing to mention is how the game flows. God of War makes the most of invisible guidance to make the player feel like they’re there as much as possible and to keep them connected, so the game flows more naturally. Everything about the new God of War is based on cinematic storytelling, and it’s all connected. Cinematic storytelling makes audio and visual performance, plot development and gameplay more immersive, while high-quality audio and visual performance, plot development and gameplay make the cinematic performance of the whole game process more realistic and dramatic, with an epic feel. Cinematic storytelling brings together audio and visual performance, plot development and gameplay, creating an even better gaming experience.

Overall, God of War 4 is a great new idea. Rather than being a game that scores 8 out of 10 in all aspects, it would be better to achieve a score of over 10 in one aspect. Even if there are some clear weaknesses, as long as the game has enough strong points for players to choose to ignore and accept, that is the nature of this game. After five years of hard work, the media and the public have recognised this, which is an exciting time for the developers of the new God of War. The game production team thanked everyone for playing, saying, ‘Thank you for joining us on this journey.’ This reminds me of a line from the movie Ready Player One: ‘Thank you for playing my game.’ As a player, I’d like to say, ‘Thank you for letting us play such an excellent God of War.’
