Our Penn State Lab seeks to advance society’s understanding of how Additive Manufacturing (or 3D Printing) can revolutionize the field of engineering design
The mission of the Made By Design Lab is to encourage informed and inspired engineering design using Additive Manufacturing technologies. We operate at the intersection of design, processes, and materials, to advance Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) research in 3 key areas:
Design Complexity
We seek to understand how AM’s layer-by-layer nature enables previously unthought of geometries and material distributions.
Design Guidelines
We seek to understand how AM processes influence the “rules of thumb” required to ensure a manufactured product mirrors its original design intent.
Design Thinking
We seek to understand how to use and teach AM and DfAM in a way that significantly impacts how engineers come up with new designs.
