Welcome to Kiss & Makeup! This is a beauty-centric blog focused on skincare, makeup looks, and the history of cosmetics. My name is Victoria, and I am passionate about all things beauty, but I wanted to make this blog for something beyond sharing makeup looks: I wanted to create a place where I could share my favorite products (the Holy Grail tab), interesting historical insights on the creation and development of cosmetics (the Makeup History tab), information on the best skincare practices (the Skincare tab), and most importantly, the science behind skincare and pigments!
To begin the blog, I’d like to discuss what beauty is to me, and how beauty impacts how I live my life. We’ve all heard the trite cliche about how “beauty lies in the eye of the beholder”. Though I agree that certain aspects of “beauty” are subjective, I believe that a significant part of what constitutes as ‘beautiful’ or ‘aesthetically pleasing’ relies upon societal and cultural values. For example, in the modern era, thicker eyebrows have come back into vogue after society decided that the thick eyebrow trend was desirable. Fashion and makeup tends come and go at society’s whim, and our definition of what is beautiful is nebulous and perpetually changing.
But despite this, beauty for me remains wholly personal. I define beauty as something that appeals to me not just aesthetically, but also emotionally. Something becomes beautiful when it makes me feel something . In the context of cosmetics, frequently find beauty in color combinations that evoke buried memories or certain styles that revolutionize our opinions. Makeup, like any other art form, can be used to challenge old conventions or to present new ideas, and it is this communication between the artist and the observer that defines beauty.
How do you define beauty? Do you agree with what I wrote? Let me know in the comments!
