Ted Talk Script:

Introduction:

Does anyone know when is the next Victoria’s Secret Show? It is on Tuesday, November 28^th. By the way, they are performing the show in Shanghai this year. Who wanted to watch that show? Well, I am pretty excited to watch all those energetic charming flesh blood walking on the shining stage. The first time I watched the show is when I was with my grandma. I liked the wings that make the models like angels; however, my grandma covered her eyes up. Just a few days ago, I was watching the show again to get some inspiration for my Ted Talk in a philosophy class. Well, I shouldn’t do this, but my friends sitting behind me find something interesting. The interesting findings could probably make up for not paying attention in the class. According to my friend, the boys sitting behind me are all staring at my computer screen. Hold for a second, why does my grandma as a woman are too shy to look at the mostly naked model while the boys have no problem at all? How can it be more obvious about the paradigm shift in the views of beauty from the past to now?

Body:

4. Emphasizing on Freedom and equality

• We could do what men do or even better. (picture of a muscular woman)

1. Not going to be haste about everything should be equal.
2. There is no limitation on female power and beauty

• We have to freedom to choose what makes us comfortable.
• We care less about others view on our appearance.

Conclusion:

Everyone could be Victoria’s Secret model in my mind. The shift in the view of beauty has moved the society to progress into a more global and diverse environment that encourages us to make a change. Stubbornly holding on to the old ideas will not do any better for you. This year, I am watching the Victoria’s Secret Show with my Grandma.

Paradigm shift essay

Introduction:

The shift of femininity is a fundamental change in approaching to our society and deeply related to our daily lives. It also underlines assumptions of the shift in female sexuality, and physicality throughout history. The moments when new ideas of women’s ability displaced old and were accepted as mainstream tenets of our society, we need to start to think about what will these changes bring to our society. Instead of using large ideas or common knowledge, the detailed examples in our daily lives were also symbolized and propelled the change that occurs all around the world. This important transformation of femininity had been going for years and will continue to raise its power in the future.

Body:

Point 1: the shift in clothing

Bras:

In ancient Greece, women started to wear a specialized garment designed to restrain their breast as the beginning of the revolution of bras. Then, women in ancient Rome adopted a form of the Greek “bra”, and added a new viewpoint towards women’s breast. Romans regarded large breasts as a characteristic of aging and considered them unattractive. Therefore, young girls started to wear breast bands secured tightly in the believing that was beautiful. Modern day, bras certainly became a statement for women, and it is now a way to express beauty. Instead of wearing a garment for restraining the breast, women have more choices and freedom in clothing and their body. It is also turned towards a feminist movement for the liberation of our body. This little shift has changed the society as a whole and the change of the perspective of beauty.

Point 2: the shift of the education for women

2. Before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China:

Along with the custom of foot binding among Chinese women that lasted through the end of the 19th century, it was recognized that a woman’s virtue lay with her lack of knowledge. As a result, female education was not considered to be worthy of attention

 

2. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China:

The percent of uneducated women was over 90%, and the most of the women who were educated had only completed the elementary level. (1931-1945) In the 1950s, a civilization project started. It provided educational opportunities for a large number of uneducated women to learn basic writing and calculation. However, the project was limited towards certain areas. In the 1980s, the Chinese government passed a new education law. It required local government to promote nine-year obligation education nationwide. When the time comes into the 21st century, university education is becoming more prevalent. The total enrollment goes up.

2. Colonial

In Colonial America elementary education was widespread in New England, but limited elsewhere. Few girls attended formal schools, but most were able to get some education at home or at “Dame schools” where women taught basic reading and writing skills in their own houses. School taught both, but in places without schools reading was mainly taught to boys and also a few privileged girls. Men handled worldly affairs and needed to read and write. This educational disparity between reading and writing explains why the colonial women often could read, but could not write and could not sign their names—they used an “X”.

 

2. 21^st Century

For the first time, more doctoral degrees are conferred on women than men in the United States women. More doctoral degrees have been conferred on women every year since. (2004-2005)

Point 3: Women’s campaigns

1. Campaigns gave women chance to test their new political skills and to conjoin disparate social reform groups.

• Married Women’s Property Act (1882)
• The repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts of 1864, 1866, and 1869

1. It united women’s groups and utilitarian. Generally, women were outraged by the inherent inequity and misogyny of the legislation.

• Ladies National Association

It demonstrated the potential power of an organized lobby group. The association successfully argued that the Acts not only demeaned prostitutes but all women and men by promoting a blatant sexual double standard.

Point 4: inequality within different countries.

Conclusion:

The shift of femininity will continue its movement around the world while inequality still exists. The paradigm shift undergoes a more developed civilization. It is a definite for the human race as a whole to experience the change. Moreover, it will lead towards are more prosperous future.

Striking images are especially important when expressing the emotion of the author. In the book It’s What I Do, the photo of the transgender prostitute captured the idea the author wanted to express (page 82). The photograph portrayed the woman with beauty and dignity regardless of her chosen profession. In the photograph, the woman is standing alone by herself and the background was blurry. The emphasis on the woman draws the readers closer and evokes reflection on this particular issue brought up in Addario’s book. Addario leads the audience to view the subject from a different aspect and uses the touching images to set up a direct communication with her audience. While relating to her accounts of living with the transgender prostitutes, this photograph adds more credibility and persuasiveness to her stories.

The second photograph in this book that moves me is on page 146. It captures an Iraqi man with rows of dead bodies discovered in Baghdad after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The man leans against the wall and dead bodies of his people are lined in front of him. The photograph captured the scenes beyond the surface of the war. The Iraqi man’s depression and compassion for the loss of innocent lives touch the softest part of my heart. Humanity remains no matter what happened. The photograph is deeply related to Addario’s inner conflicts she mentioned about showing beauty from this cruel world. The photograph supports the ideas Addario wants to explain and bring attention to the reality of war.

Similarly, I will use vivid images and videos to give a sense of reality to my stories. Most of my passion blogs take place in the Temple, therefore, I will include pictures of different spots in the temple to finally make connections and give an overview of the place. Moreover, I will include pictures with the living objects to bring my stories alive. Just like how Addario uses her own photographs and gives a unique approach to her experiences. I also intend to put in photos of my own to add more personality to my passion blog.

In chapter 7 of the book It’s What I Do, Addario stated that she is conflicted about how to make the same war scenes more creative and meaningful to her audience. As a photojournalist, she has been covering the same topic over many years, it is hard to portray the beauty of the victims, rather than the ugliness of war with the audience and give a deep insight of the photographs. Through a vivid description of her own personal experience, she successfully draws the audience close to her accounts and makes reflections on the issues she mentioned. By choosing her words wisely, she creates images for the audience to see and adds credibility to her words. Addario is also being straightforward to the audience about her feelings and the purpose of her photographs. The reading lets you get to know Addario and her photographs on a more personal level. In fact, the way the conflict is presented allows her work to come to life and makes it more relatable to the audience.

The soul of an extraordinary story is the central conflict. One of the interior struggles I have within myself has been following me up until now. As a teenager, I am always interested in trying new things. Sometimes, I would think: “why can’t I just live like all my other friends?” They could enjoy their summers with friends while I was always studying in a temple. With the uncertainty my future, I am trying to do the best and never regret my choices. Since my true passion lies with the temple, I will always choose the temple over a social event, no matter my internal struggle. The struggles are like a ladder, once you take a step forward toward the things you like, you get to a higher position and there is one less step to take to reach the top. Just like Addario in this book, no matter how she struggles to be a photojournalist, the driving passion in her mind keeps on pushing her to overcome the steps in front her. And as a result, she became clearer about what it is that she wants and why she wants it. This is a path that everyone will take in their life, luckily, I know my passion, so I can move toward it sooner.

 

Rhetoric Analysis Essay Draft

Introduction:

What has technology actually brought to our society? It absolutely makes our life more convenient and efficient. In this high-speed development of everything around us, some old-fashioned traditions are inevitability forgotten. The preservation of the traditions or not becomes a heated question all around the world. In this article, my intent is to express the importance of keeping the old ways of living which we are rooted by introducing two artifacts with their ideology and concerns. The first artifact is the Everlast notebook I introduced in my speech and the second artifact is a show called the American Gods.

Body:

 

1. Evolution of the belief

Over the years, our beliefs has been shifting over time. Indulgence in material satisfaction will erode our faith in mental and emotional enrichment due to the accelerating development of technology. The American Gods take on a special perspective in projecting the conflicts we are all facing in the modern world. In old days, with the high advanced technology or so called the study or science people put their faith in religions or the power of the nature. However, it turns out to be that we now are educated to the belief of science. We sit in a classroom and study the theories scientist conduct and believe it the the truth. Even though the history has always prove us wrong by the revolution of science itself. Therefore, the question becomes clear, what should we believe.

 

2. The past was forgotten

The American Gods briefly introduced the idea that whatever the society believes would results in a formation of a god. For example, nowadays people truly believe in the technology in our life and therefore it becomes a god. Some representatives of the old gods are the god of death, god of spring, or Jesus. It is a sad fact that in the tv show the old started to get forgotten and therefore diminish from the world. This is deeply connected to what we are facing outside the TV. We could probably be laughing at the crazy idea presented in the show. However, it mirrored the reality and the problems we are facing.

 

3.       The shift in desires

Materialistic could be described as the word for the modern world. Since birth, people worked so hard to achieve their so called “life goals”. The goals are mostly composed of money and pleasure. I have asked so many friend for the reason of their chosen major in college. The feedback are interesting to look at. Most of them have no idea what they are going to do so they just follow the other when they are choosing their major. Some honest ones tells me that they just want a good job. Others utters that’s what they are good at. However, the reasons has all being shifted from the past. It is hasty to say that people in the past don’t want to get rich, but there is a deeper drive behind money for their pursuit of study. I believe it is the pure love of the subject they are working on. To follow up with the high speeding development of the society people’s desire started to shift and eventually forgotten the principles they hold in the past. In the TV show, it expressed the idea that the old believes is what you can hold towards the end. We all know that death is inevitable, and what can technology or money bring to you when you are facing death? It is not saying the materialistic is completely wrong but to give an idea that only faith could give us peace.

 

4.       Preservation of the traditions.

Conclusion:

As we try so hard to keep up with the pace of the modern world, there is something that never changes. The belief and tradition are rooted in our lives and it is not evolving like the technology. As the ideas from both artifact contrast with each other, it also expresses the problems we are facing in the modern world. It is too hasty to reach the conclusion about which one is better. However, we could make the right choice for our own life and help society to embrace the differentiations and the possibilities for the future.

Introduction:

What’s the first word to come to mind when you think about traditional notebooks? Heavy, old-schooled, hard to manage?  However, the artifact I will be introducing today is called the Everlast notebook. It is designed to be a notebook that sets you free from a traditional pen or paper. And it can be reused by simply microwaving your notebook for less than a minute. If you don’t have a microwave with you, don’t worry we got it fixed. You could easily wipe off anything written on this notebook by water. Your notes can be uploaded to your phone as a PDF file and connected any apps you wanted your notes to be saved to. For example, gmail, ibook, icloud, or even google doc could be linked with your notebook. This artifact challenges the traditions and joins with the new eco-friendly ideology. It keeps up with the development of the modern world and gives possibility for the future. Today, I am going to explain how the artifact is involved in both civic and rhetoric aspects.

 

Environmental sustainability:

1.      Paper waste

• The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines that about 29% of the city’s waste in the United States is made up of paper and paper products. This is more than any other waste product in America today
• Currently, the manufacture of paper is the largest industrial use of water on a per pound of product basis.  It requires almost 43 gallons of water to produce just 1 pounds of paper.

 

Transition:

These statistics show that paper production is not only harmful to the trees, but it also requires a large amount of resources that could be better used elsewhere. It is obvious to see the benefits the Everlast notebook will provide for the environment we all live in. In a time when our natural resources are diminishing, we must find innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint. It not only solves the environmental problems, the Everlast book also expands its influence in technology.

 

Technology:

Transition:

Now let’s take a look at the notebook itself. Notice the choice of the title. It is a contrasting idea because when you think about a traditional notebook, the last word to come to mind is “Everlasting.

• Emphasizes the unique quality of the notebook
• Give the audience a direct view of the artifact

2.  the common places embodied in the artifacts

• It involves a large population that take written notes every day. It is for everyone to consider the usage of this artifacts.

3. The Ideology of the artifact

• As students we are the leading generation of the world, we have the responsibility to make the world more connected, sustainable, and creative.

 

Conclusion:

Clearly, the Everlast notebook produces substantial benefits. This artifact is related to our daily life in both a rhetoric and a civic way. In view of the students, it updates our knowledge and broadens our horizons. To speak of society, it enhances the long-term eco-friendly development. The artifact definitively achieved its purpose: to introduce this new way of note-taking to the modern world.
