Researchers

Hailley Fargo is the Student Engagement Coordinator at Penn State University, University Park campus. As a librarian in this position, Hailley liaises with non-academic units, collaborates with her colleagues in libraries across the Commonwealth to create an aligned approach to student engagement, and thinks strategically about ways to ensure student employment in the Libraries is meaningful. Hailley first started at Penn State in July 2016, as the evening Reference & Instruction Librarian in the Knowledge Commons. In July 2017, she moved into the newly created, Student Engagement Librarian role. Hailley holds a Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and received her BA in English from Coe College, in Cedar Rapids, IA. Hailley’s research interests revolve around student engagement, reference services, peer-to-peer services in academic libraries, digital and information literacy, and undergraduate research. Additionally, Hailley is a co-founder and editor of The Librarian Parlor, a blog dedicated to building a community around LIS research. When Hailley’s not in the library, you can find her biking around State College, drinking coffee, tweeting, reading memoirs, or working on her newest embroidery project.

Project support

Student Engagement Network (SEN)

The SEN is aimed at connecting students across the Penn State system with student engagement opportunities and providing a vision for the institution about what student engagement looks like at Penn State. This is a joint effort between Undergraduate Education, Student Affairs, and Outreach and Online Education, and comes out of work done by Penn State’s Council on Engaged Scholarship. A few major initiatives of the SEN include a student grant program to help students fund their student engagement experiences and a Faculty Academy, to help advance the knowledge of student engagement scholarship. You can learn more about the 2019-2020 Academy in the SEN’s latest faculty newsletter.

Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL)

IRDL is a IMLS grant funded workshop aimed at supporting new librarians in developing the skills they need to complete a research project they design and build a network of research collaborators and colleagues in the process. Scholars submit an application and if selected, travel to Loyola Marymont University for a one-week intensive workshop. More information on the 2019 cohort can be found on IRDL’s blog.

University Libraries

The mission of the University Libraries is to “inspire intellectual discovery and learning” and mapping the student engagement journey project hopes to not only inspire learning, but also provide insight on how the Libraries can continue to support the work of student engagement.
