This year, MARM 2024 will feature a Chemagination Competition! For this event, high school students are asked to imagine that they are living 25 years in the future and have been invited to write an article for ChemMatters, an ACS magazine for high school students that focuses on the role of chemistry in everyday life. Students are also asked to design the magazine cover. The subject of the article is: "Describe a recent breakthrough or innovation in chemistry (and/or its applications) that has improved the quality of people's lives today." The article must be written to fit into one of four categories: Alternative Energy, Environment, Medicine/Health, or New Materials. Prizes will be awarded in each of the four categories.

First Place category winners from the ACS Local Sections' Chemagination Competitions are eligible to compete at the regional level. If this team cannot participate for any reason, the Second Place winner or other team can serve as an alternate. In addition, in lieu of holding their own formal Chemagination Competition, a Local Section can choose to submit one team per category directly to the 2024 MARM Chemagination Competition using their own selection process.

Chemagination is a unique experience for students in that it encourages the investigation of past, present, and/or future discoveries in chemistry and related sciences. It also provides the opportunity for students to apply their creativity, and enhance their teamwork, public speaking, and presentation skills.

Key Deadlines:

March 22: Local Sections notify MARM 2024 Chemagination Coordinator of their preliminary intent to participate in the 2024 Competition

April 08: Local Sections confirm their intent to participate in the MARM 2024 Chemagination Competition

May 06: Local Sections submit their estimate of the number of teams they will be sending to the MARM 2024 Chemagination Competition

May 18: Local Sections submit the Chemagination entry forms, which include the article titles for each category and the name and contact information for each participating student. (Full submission process will be announced at a later date.)

May 31: Teams submit their articles for pre-judging

June 08: MARM 2024 Chemagination Competition takes place at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA!
