Hello, everyone! Welcome to my Passion Blog, Music for More! I will be discussing a different musical artist, reviewing one of their most popular albums, and demonstrating the amazing aspects of one of their songs through dance. I have been surrounded by dance and music all my life, and I have really fallen in love with both. I feel that by being a dancer, it has allowed me to appreciate various types of music in ways that others may not and to be exposed to numerous artists. I can’t wait for you to immerse yourself into some of my favorite musical artists!
Billy Joel
Today I will be discussing my absolute favorite musical artist: Billy Joel! I’m sure that most people know who Billy Joel is, however, I feel that some people have never really expanded upon listening to his music beyond “Piano Man.” Billy Joel is currently 74 years old, from New York, and a humble man. He has released thirteen studio albums throughout his career, releasing his first album at only 22 years old. These albums and brilliant songwriting have allowed him to win twenty-three Grammy Awards and break many records. In fact, one record is waiting to be broken this upcoming July. Billy Joel is still touring around the world, and on July 24, 2024, he will have performed 150 times at Madison Square Garden, being the only artist to have performed that many times in the same arena. Billy Joel is a magnificent and iconic artist that has transformed the music industry in such a positive way.
The Stranger
The most popular album, in my opinion, that Billy Joel has ever released was on September 29, 1977 titled The Stranger. This album consists of nine songs and is a lyrical masterpiece. The first time that I ever listened to this album, the use of the piano throughout every song and his nimble skills immediately caught my attention and made me love Billy Joel and his work. It amazed me how wonderful he was at playing this instrument while singing lyrics that were so thoughtfully crafted. My favorite song from this album has to be “Vienna,” and I encourage all of you to listen to it!
“Piano Man”
Although I previously mentioned “Piano Man” being the only song some people really know from Billy Joel, it truly is my favorite song of his. It has so many theatrical aspects and background music that make it so iconic and up-lifting. The storytelling of the lyrics is so intriguing, and I fell in love with this song when I was fortunate enough to do a dance to it a few years ago. Down below, you will find a video of myself and my dance studio dancing to “Piano Man.” While watching, focus on how different people are able to interpret the song and how it can be brought to life through choreography. Music is magical, and it can connect people in all sorts of ways.
