General Body Meetings / Trivia Night

  • What: General body meeting nights are a time for community and skill building activities. Guest speakers will come speak to us about their professional experiences in the work force. Annoucements for special outreach, professional development, and social events occuring in the next month are discussed. Come join us for some pizza, guest speakers, and general organization announcements! Trivia at Zeno’s to follow.

Pizza in the Park
Our first social event of the Fall 2020 semester, a socially distanced in-person gathering with pizza at Harvest Fields park in Boalsbug.
February MRS Meeting + Snippet Speaker Dr. John Mauro
Join us at our second meeting of the semester for a discussion of upcoming outreach, professional development, and social activities! Dr. John Mauro will speak on his career path through industry to academia.

March MRS Meeting + Career Service Center Visit
Join us for our March Meeting! We will host a representative of the Career Services Department to speak about opportunities and resources for grad students at Penn State.

ENVISION 2019
MRS is recruiting volunteers for the ENVISION annual STEM Career Day for Young Women. The all-day event features workshops and networking sessions designed to expose middle and high school-aged women to potential academic and career pathways in STEM.

Art Trip to Philadelphia
MRS is excited to organize our third Art Trip! This year we will going to Philadelphia and visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This weekend-long trip will be a great opportunity to spend some time outside the lab and bond with other MRS members. Sign-ups are limited to 30 people and priority will be given to MRS national members.

Upward Bound
MRS will be with the Upward Bound program to host high school students coming to Penn State for a fun-filled day of science. MRS volunteers will assist in demos and short interactive lectures on different topics related to materials science.  Check back for more details closer to the date.

September MRS Meeting + Membership Drive
Join us at our second meeting of the semester and bring $20 if you would like to become an MRS national member. We will also be hosting Dr. Susan Trolier-McKinstry, a faculty membr in the MatSE department and past MRS National President. She will be discussiong opportunties that MRS can provide for students on a professional level.

Bake Sale Fundraiser
MRS is fundraising to raise money for the Summer Academy Student Association (SASA), an organization that works to build and encourage  furture growth and success of its blind, visually impaired and deaf-blind members. All proceeds raised will sponsor a small scholarship for a potential student.

Back-to-School Bowling with MRS
Come join us for a night of bowling and get to know MRS members before you get inundated with coursework! The MRS chapter will pay for costs of the shoes and lanes, but please bring money (cash) for food and drinks.

Day trip to Corning
Join us for a professional development trip to Corning Inc. The trip includes a guided tour of the R&D facilities and manufacturing technology facilities, lunch and Q&A Professional Development panel, and a trip to the Corning Glass Museum

Candidacy Jeopardy
MatSE Candidacy Jeopardybrings together MatSE Ph.D. students preparing for candidacy and Ph.D. candidates who have taken candidacy to spark collaborative discussion regarding the fundamentals of MatSE and MatSE candidacy preparation in a fun way.
