For this post, I decided to calculate the amount of water I use in a year flushing the toilet. I based the amount of flushes on a number that I know I get to in a day. My toilet uses 1.6 gallons per flush as it is an older model. Below is the math used to calculate how many gallons I would use in a year with an estimate of 10 flushes in a day.
\[\frac{1.6\text{ Gallons Water}}{1 \text{ Flush}}\times \frac{10\text{ Flushes}}{1\text{ Day}}\times \frac{365\text{ Days}}{1\text{ Year}}\approx 5,840 \text { Gallons/Year}\]
The end result is approximately 5,840 gallons in a year. It is approximately because there will be days when I will not flush as much possibly, or I will not be in my house at various points throughout the year.
In regards to the article written, 5,800 gallons of water is quite a lot to use in a year and there are ways I could reduce the amount of water used per year which would in turn reduce the impact I have on the amount of water stress.
