About the Program

The Mathematics Learning Assistant (LA) Program at Penn State – University Park Campus is a student-centered initiative designed to enhance undergraduate mathematics instruction through active learning and peer engagement.

Through structured training and ongoing support, Math LAs develop valuable communication, leadership, and pedagogical skills while helping their peers succeed in mathematics. The program provides a meaningful professional development opportunity and experience for Math LAs.

Math LAs are undergraduate students who work alongside faculty members and graduate TAs to support classroom instruction, facilitate small-group activities, and promote collaborative problem-solving during lectures and during evening problem-solving sessions.

Whether you’re a student interested in becoming a Math LA, a faculty member looking to collaborate, or simply curious about our mission, we invite you to explore how the Math LA Program is enriching the educational experience for undergraduate students in math courses at Penn State.

What Faculty Are Saying

“My LA has been very dependable and helpful this semester. She is motivated, professional, and organized, which has made a difference in my time working with her. She attends class and meetings on time and is quick to respond to emails. Her organization and dedication to her commitments is impressive, especially considering that this is her first year. I always appreciate having her in the classroom.”

“My LA has been a pleasure to work with this semester. He is a dedicated student and is very helpful with the students in our classroom. On top of handling his typical LA duties, he takes it upon himself to collect quizzes and such. He is very kind, friendly and seems to be a great student outside of his LA duties, also. He does a great job of answering student questions, and I have appreciated having him around the classroom this semester.”

What Students Are Saying

“It helped me reinforce the concepts I’ve learned in class.”

“It helped me to better understand some concepts I was struggling on.”

“Helped me understand what I need to study more.”
