According to a study done at UCLA, diversity amongst the cast and crew of film sets has increased in the world of streaming. Minorities such as women, and people of color, were able to find more jobs for productions going to streaming as opposed to theatrical productions.

Deadline makes mention that the report shows a positive outlook for the future. The White share of major theatrical film roles went down last year, increasing the number of minorities represented on the big screen. This can be seen on the graphic below.

UCLA’s report surveys the top 89 English-language films released theatrically, and the top 100 that are released on streaming. The report specifies that theatrical films that are made of 31% to 40% minority cast members enjoy the highest global performances at the box office on average. Interestingly enough, it turns out that Hollywood studios may want to make diversity in their film a priority if they wish to remain top performers at the theaters. Not to mention, it’s the right thing to do.
