What do I want to blog about?

My Thought Process:

Essentially, I need to consider what I can blog about for around 10 weeks which can be thought-provoking and fun. Obviously I don’t want to make this blog a chore: I want to enjoy writing each post. With that in mind, here are my two ideas that I’m both interested in and excited about.

Idea Number 1: I could do a football blog, specifically about the NFL. It’s practical, because the NFL season is about to start, meaning I’ll have new content each week to discuss. However, since the NFL has so many games and teams, I might only write my blog on my opinions of a couple of games and teams, as opposed to trying to fit the entire scope of the NFL into one 500 word entry.

Why would I be passionate about this? Two reasons. One: As I went through middle and high school, football was one of my distractions that allowed me to take a break from school work and instead do something fun. I think this blog could be an extension of that – a break from school work. Only this time, I’ll actually get credit for it, which is a plus. Two: For the past couple of years I’ve had a running partner, and during football season we would unpack everything that happened over the weekend. We would provide analysis and hot takes about many of the most notable teams. Just because we aren’t running together anymore doesn’t mean that I’m suddenly going to stop watching and thinking about football. An NFL blog would be the perfect medium for me to convey my thoughts and reactions from the previous week.

Idea Number 2: I could do a blog related to the book series A Song of Ice and Fire and the show based on them, Game of Thrones. This is practical because there’s so much content in the books and the shows: lots of characters, lots of plots, lots of things to analyze. I fell in love with these books over the past year, and I would love to be able to revisit them in order to give my opinions and analysis on certain aspects.

One of the things I love about A Song of Ice and Fire is how ambiguous everything is. This is not a series detailing the triumphs of good over evil; rather, it’s a documentation of fictional events that emphasizes how human all the characters are. Furthermore, it’s impossible for two people to feel the same way about every character and plot line. It’s a series that generates opinions. When I read the books, I formed my own opinions, and this blog will be the perfect way for me to share them (and it’s the perfect excuse for me to reread/rewatch certain parts).

Whichever idea I choose, I like both of these ideas because either one of them will allow me to accomplish the goal of this blog: I’ll be able to share my thoughts. Not just my thoughts, but my opinionated thoughts. This should be fun.

Hi Matt! I liked your possible passion blog ideas. I was also thinking about doing a sports related blog, but with soccer instead of the NFL. However, I also like watching other sports like American football so I think it would be cool to read your opinions about some of the games. It’s definitely a good way to take a break, and I personally would look forward to a blog on this topic. I think your other idea is good too, I haven’t read A Song of Ice and Fire, so maybe a suggestion I have for you if you were to make your blog centered around this to either have a brief introduction to the series or some characters before delving deeper into it. Another alternative is to encourage us to do our own research about it or read the book ourselves(time permitting).

Hi Matt! It sounds like you’re very passionate about both of your possible choices, and both sound like great ways to continue pursuing things you already enjoy. An NFL blog would allow you to keep up with current events in the world. A blog about Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones, on the other hand, would focus more on a fantasy world, which could be really interesting to read about. You could also try analyzing things that happen in the stories and connect them to real world problems and events. Both topics seem like they would work really well as a passion blog.

    Hi Matt,
I really enjoyed both your ideas for your blog as I can see how passionate you are about these topics which will make it much more fun to write about. Coming from South Africa I don’t know much about football so that would be a really helpful blog for me. I feel as though your NFL blog would be a good way for your readers to get some commendation on what they have just seen and creates a platform for discussion. Your idea on ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ also sounds very fun and would be so interesting for your readers who have already read the books and may serve as encouragement for those who have not yet read them. Good luck with whatever topic you decide on!
