Last semester I elaborated on the different places I have traveled to and the cultural impact I experienced, however, this semester I am changing things just a little. I am going to write about places around the world that I would love to visit one day. My passion for traveling started when my family began to go on lavish vacations when I was in high school. At this point, I truly appreciated the history and cultural differences of the different places we traveled to. So, the first country I would love to travel to is England.
I know England is not a paradise with white sand beaches and warm weather, but I have always wanted to travel there. I have always been intrigued by their distinct accents and way of life. They seem similar to the United States but also completely different. The main area I would like to experience is the bustling city of London. With nearly nine million people living in the city, it resembles the size and environment of New York City.
One interesting artifact that attracts tourists to London happens to be Big Ben. The actual name of the massive clock tower happens to be the Elizabeth Tower and the bell inside the clock is named Big Ben. The tower stands at 315 feet tall and it takes 399 steps to reach the Aryton light at the very top of the tower. Although tourists are not allowed to tour the clock tower, United Kingdom residents may complete an application in order to visit the tower. Tourists may still appreciate the beauty of Big Ben from the outside.
Another iconic attraction in London is the London Eye. This Ferris wheel stands at 443 feet tall and was awarded the world’s largest Ferris wheel from 1999-2006. The main purpose of construction was to celebrate the new Millennium which is also why this wheel may be called the Millennium Wheel. There are thirty-two glass capsules on each spoke of the wheel which can hold a twenty-five person capacity.
One last attraction I would love to visit is Buckingham Palace. I find it so interesting that they still have a royal family even though they do not pass legislation. The actual Parliament and Prime Minister create and pass legislation; however, the Queen does still oversee the activity done in the Parliament. The main purpose of the royal family leans more towards providing a national identity and performing charitable services. Nonetheless, their palace proves to be extravagant.
All in all, I am intrigued by the distinct attractions and ways of life within London. I am hoping to travel there to experience the lavish city and buildings. I want to experience the difference in culture and social behaviors demonstrated in England compared to the United States. Hopefully, in the next couple of years, I have the opportunity to travel there with my family!

Alexis, my favorite vacation ever was when my family and I went to London this past summer. You’re right that it was similar enough to the United States to be comfortable, but different enough that it was exciting and I was able to pick up on quite a few cultural differences each day. Unfortunately, I think that Big Ben is still under construction, but Buckingham Palace is so beautiful…I recommend that you go to visit the Changing of the Guard! Anyway, thanks for this post. I hope you get to go someday!
