Project Abstract
The primary goal of this project was to produce silver/graphite/copper laminates making electrical contacts. The major challenge towards co-sintering of these laminates is the delamination issue caused at the interface due to accumulation of graphite. This is due to poor diffusion of copper into graphite. In this project, we mitigate this issue by using silver coated copper particles at the interface during lamination. The electroless silver coated copper facilitated diffusion and prevented graphite accumulation at the interface. This resulted in significant improvement in interlaminar shear strength with a mean value of 5262.01 psi and a standard deviation of 749.2 psi. Our preliminary studies shows the feasibility of replacing or reducing the use of high cost silver part in electrical contact manufacturing industry.
