Project Abstract

Subduction of oceanic lithosphere and deep slabs contributes to plate tectonics in many aspects. Understanding subduction dynamics is essential for geologists to assess the dangers they pose, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. In this project, we developed a machine learning tool to identify subduction zones in numerical convection models. We used two approaches in this project: linear classification and convolutional neural network (CNN). We applied these two methods to our machine learning code to determine which method works best to detect subduction zones. This machine learning tool will be a powerful aid for geologists to bring new insights to our understanding of plate tectonics.
