Project Title: Discovering the Mechanical Properties of Spicule Inspired Structures

In this study, we plan to produce varying spicule-inspired cylinders by 3D programming software and 3D printing to comprehend what part the micro and macrostructure plays in the mechanical properties. We are hoping to see that the spicule-inspired cylinders would have an improved strength and strain threshold as compared to a solid hollowed cylinder (controlled sample). We are also hoping that the 3D printed compression and 3 point bending tests would mimic the same tests performed on a 3D modeling software. We would be performing these tests on cylinders 150 mm tall, 10 mm in diameter, and 1.3 mm in wall thickness and adding a spicule inspired design with varying hole sizes of 0.5 mm by 0.5 mm, 1 mm by 1 mm, and 1.5 mm by 1.5 mm as compared to a cylinder with the same dimension without the added design. Varying the sizes of the spicules within the cylinders for these tests would also pinpoint which measurements would be ideal for this performance. Therefore, spicule-inspired cylinders should have stronger mechanical properties and allow for an improvement of architecture with less weight and more strength.
