Project Title: The effects of processing and sintering conditions on the properties of Cu-Ni-Si powdered metals
Abstract
Global warming is on the rise and this requires newer car engines to be more compact to fit under newer and stricter emission control laws. This has caused companies to downsize the Internal Combustion engines (IC). This negatively affects the iron-based parts for being used due to their low thermal conductivity and high friction resulting in a low fatigue limit. This limitation has pushed companies toward copper-based alloys as they have a higher fatigue life, higher thermal conductivity and lower friction compared to the iron counter parts. This project investigates how to improve the properties of the copper-based alloys through a severe plastic deformation process known as equal channel angular processing (ECAP). We also examined the effect that sintering time had on the alloys by comparing conventional press and sinter process. The results from this study showed that the samples that were processed with ECAP had better mechanical properties than the conventionally processed samples. The microhardness of the ECAP processed samples were about 20% higher than that of conventionally processed parts. Additionally, we noted that sintering the samples for 30 minutes had a greater hardness than the samples that were sintered for only 5 minutes.
