Project Abstract

This project explores the potential of using Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) methods, specifically Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify different painting materials based on the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) data. With technology, a network can be trained to recognize different images from the can. This project aims to identify materials for the purpose of art conservation through non-invasive means to avoid exposing these works to damage. Although artists employ many different materials like paint, this segment of research has focused on the identification of paper. Through this, some success has been found as the networks are capable of differentiating 35 types of paper with high certainty. The success in recognition demonstrates that this could be a feasible method for the recognition of materials in priceless art pieces.
