Project Abstract

A three-dimensional traverse has been designed to position several types of probes inside a compressed air wind tunnel. The compressed air wind tunnel consists of a high-pressure vessel meant to allow for increased fluid density and can run at a maximum static pressure of 500 psi. In the CAWT, the pressure of the air inside the tunnel can be precisely controlled which enables matching of the aerodynamics of large models such as helicopters, airfoils, or rotor blades by using a scaled-down model. The three-dimensional traverse system will accurately locate sensors such as pitot-static tubes and hot-wire anemometers for velocity measurements inside the test section of the CAWT. This system also helps control the movement of the probes inside the test section of the CAWT and acquire data at various positions. This 3-D traverse will help future researchers set up experiments inside the CAWT easily and acquire data quickly and precisely.
