Project Abstract

Underground mining operations provide several minerals for many applications. Miners working in these operations are exposed to hazardous conditions including large equipment like trucks and excavators. They are also exposed to dust particles, sometimes respirable, that result in irreversible respiratory ailments. Though challenging in an underground environment, automation of some of the equipment will remove miners from harm’s way. This will be enabled by sensors that can work efficiently in darkness. This paper describes the major equipment that are used in underground mines and the sensors that would facilitate their automation.
