Project Abstract


Team composition strategies in agile software development can significantly impact project success, yet the interplay between human factors remains underexplored. This research aims to identify optimal team composition strategies by examining the relationship between the Big Five personality traits (Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience), team reflexivity, and team performance. Our approach involves an analysis of data from agile teams across organizations, employing a quantitative methodology with empirical surveys for data collection.

An analysis of personality traits, reflexivity, and their interactions on performance yields interesting results. Initial preliminary findings on existing data suggest that team reflexivity significantly impacts performance, explaining 16.3% of the variance in team performance (p < 0.01). Including personality traits increases the explained variance of our model to 27.7% (p < 0.05). Notably, elevated levels of Conscientiousness and Openness at the team level might potentially decrease performance by reducing reflexivity’s positive effects, suggesting that a balanced team composition could be beneficial. These findings, thought not all statistically significant, indicate promising directions for further research.

The results of this study can offer valuable insights for optimizing team composition in agile environments. By understanding the complex interplay between personality traits and reflexivity, managers can make more informed decisions in team formation and development. Future research should focus on expanding the sample size of industry professionals across diverse regions, enhancing the generalizability of findings and potentially improving team composition strategies in agile software development.
