Project Abstract

Current methods of extracting lithium from brine by solvent extraction, while having highly selective recovery of Li, are energy-intensive, costly, and generate waste due to energy required for phase mixing and pH adjustment. In this study, we propose a novel method to reduce or eliminate the mechanical shaking and base requirements by introducing electrodialysis to solvent extraction. Our experimental setup utilizes an H-Cell under an electric field, with 2 chambers filled with LiCl, NaCl, or KCl, separated by a solvent-soaked membrane. Linear sweep voltammetry was used to obtain a current voltage curve, and the slope of the curve translated into resistance. Preliminary results from the two-electrode system show lower resistance for lithium than sodium and potassium, indicating favorable lithium extraction even at neutral pH.
