Project Abstract

Preserving and interpreting historical documents and artifacts is crucial for maintaining cultural heritage. Traditional methods often involve complex and costly equipment, limiting accessibility. This project presents a low-cost approach to multispectral imaging, which captures images at multiple wavelengths, revealing details not visible to the human eye. By integrating a modified gantry system with custom software and open market components, our system will provide detailed analysis of materials based on their spectral properties. Our system will utilize LED lights with different wavelengths to enhance the visibility of various pigments, inks, and substrates, facilitating the noninvasive study of historical texts and artifacts. The primary objectives include developing a user-friendly imaging system, integrating it with a gantry for precise positioning, and validating its effectiveness through real world testing. So far, by completing the gantry and image capturing systems, we have demonstrated the benefits of having an open source system which allows for flexibility and customization. We hope to gain results that will demonstrate that this low-cost, flexible solution can recover lost details in documents and artifacts, making advanced multispectral imaging more accessible to a wider range of institutions and researchers.
