1. Brown Bag Lunch! (10/23 @ 10 am )

The Multicultural Engineering Graduate Association (MEGA) will be hosting a brown bag lunch for one of our own MEGA scholars, Dynisty Wright.  Come join us for a brunch and support your fellow members!
 
The event will be on Friday, October 23rd at 10 am via Zoom. Hope to see you there!

2. National First-Generation Advocates

Next month on November 8th is National First-Generation College Day. First Gen Advocates is putting on two events: (1) where we need anyone (undergraduate, graduate, faculty, staff, industry) that is/was a first-generation college student to make a video or blurb about their successes in their current position and (2) we are having a trivia celebration for this event the day before (November 7th). During the first event we will be sharing those videos and blurbs on our website and social media so that undergraduate students from all over the world can be uplifted on National First-Generation College day and know that they can do anything and go anywhere as a first-generation student. Our second event held the day before is a celebration to destress through trivia and talk to other first-generation students.

 

I have attached two fliers to this email. The first flier is the call for videos and blurbs to be sent to everyone and the second flier is the trivia event to be sent to undergraduate students. Anyone is welcome to attend trivia as it states on our first flier. If you happen to know anyone who was a first-generation student and is now working in industry, could you please forward this to them as well? We would really appreciate if you could forward this information on behalf of First Gen Advocates.

3. Girls Who Code College Loop (10/25 @5pm)

 

Good Afternoon,

 

My name is Guneet Baweja and I am one of the Outreach Chairs for Girls Who Code College Loop Penn State Chapter. We’re excited to announce that we will be having our very first General Body Meeting this month on October 25th @ 5 pm EST. I am reaching out to you to extend an invite to our GBM. It will be our pleasure to host an organization like yours.

 

A little bit about us, Girls Who Code College Loop Penn State is Girls Who Code’s official chapter at Penn State University. We aim to build a collaborative community where everyone learns by getting hands-on industry experience. Our organization believes that the gender-gap can only be bridged if people from all genders come together to collaborate with one another. We offer project-based Android and iOS development courses from CodePath, career and networking workshops, leadership opportunities, and more.

 

For our first GBM this month we will be having CodePath’s Outreach Coordinator “Monique Rosales”. She will be talking about the Android and iOS development courses that we will start in Spring 2020 and the different opportunities that come with it. It is a great opportunity that we wouldn’t want your members to miss!!

4. Young Women in STEM Workshop
 

Greetings!

The Penn State Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) organization is thrilled to hold our second Young Women in STEM (YWS) Workshop. The workshop will take place virtually this semester due to the current pandemic situation. Last year, this event brought in over 100 middle and high school girls from Centre County and surrounding areas! The event allows young women to engage in hands-on activities in STEM.

This semester, our theme is “To Be a Scientist At Home!”. Our goal is to familiarize young women scientists with experiments across different STEM fields. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage girls to explore their interests in an interdisciplinary and collaborative working environment.

We are seeking proposals for interactive/hands-on activities that can be done at home. We will select 6 proposals for the event from all the submissions. If your proposal is selected, we ask that you record a video with the demonstration for the activity (the video is not needed for the initial proposal submission). The videos will be shared with the students to be watched in their free time. Therefore, you will not be doing your demo live.

Event Timeline:

  • Oct 30, 2020: Proposal submission deadline

  • Nov 2, 2020: Announcement of the selected proposals

  • Nov 18, 2020: Video submission deadline

  • Nov 25, 2020: Workshop materials become available to parents and students

Workshop Proposal Requirements:

o   Role Description:

  • We are seeking for activities in all STEM fields.

  • The activities should be between 30-45-minutes that are designed to engage young women scientists (5-10th grades).

  • Your workshop should relate to the theme “To Be A Scientist At Home!”.

  • We kindly ask you to keep in mind that all activities will be done at home when you brainstorm for the proposal. It would be great if you can come up with ideas that utilize materials that are easily accessible around the house and/or cheap to purchase.

  • Faculty members, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit workshop ideas!
