Thomas Headon is a 19-year-old, London based musician. He wrote and produced his debut single “Grace” and released it in September 2019. The song reached over half a million streams in the first two months after its release, which is huge for an independent artist. His almost boy next door air to him and his music shows in his first EP, The Greatest Hits. In the EP, Headon sings about complicated relationships, falling for people at traffic lights, and lingering feelings. His second EP, The Goodbye EP, was just released this September.
“Car Window”, a favorite of mine by Headon, touches on that hopeless romantic tendency to fall in love with complete strangers. This song is definitely for the people who can’t stop thinking about that one person you saw on vacation or on your daily commute. He asks himself if a red light is a “good time to find someone to fall for only by eyesight”, scolding himself for obsessing over someone he doesn’t even know while simultaneously not being able to look away. As the song goes on, he still can’t get her off of his mind, admitting that he has broken his “own heart through a window”. The sound of the track is laid back; it has a bedroom pop feel with almost-spoken lyrics that push the sense of self-doubt that is expressed in the background vocals, even further.
“Loving You”, a track off of The Goodbye EP, has a similar sound to “Car Window”. It keeps the relaxed, bedroom pop feel to it up until the bridge, where it picks up a bit and becomes more experimental. The lyrics delve into the struggle of loving someone and being all the way in, but they aren’t quite there yet. Headon sings that “even though I know I jumped in, I wish you would follow me down”, expressing how much he wants that person to get to the same level in the relationship as he is. He compliments them, saying that they’re “so good to love” and that is why it’s so easy for him to love them. Still, he knows that it doesn’t mean they love him back. This song wraps you in a false sense of comfort, almost. By that, I mean that it sounds so chill and upbeat, but when you read the lyrics you’re able to feel the hurt that really lives in this song.
Thomas Headon is only just starting his career and if his almost 100 thousand Instagram followers and over half a million Spotify listeners are any indication, it will only grow from here.
