Red Hearse is a trio of insanely talented individuals who all came together to make music. Jack Antonoff, known for his work with huge stars like Taylor Swift and Lorde, Sounwave who has worked with BeyoncĂ© and Mary J Blige, and Sam Dew who has multiple Grammy nominations under his belt. This week, I’ve been listening to one of the tracks from their self-titled album called “Half Love” on repeat.
“Half Love” is the first track on the album, and it starts it off perfectly. Sam Dew comes in with high falsetto vocals, singing about the impending doom of the “what are we” conversation that everyone knows all too well. He talks about how no one expects their relationship to go anywhere, but explains how he doesn’t want to “waste no time with you”. The chorus represents the conversation, proposing the idea of being “real with it” because he’s “just too good for that half love”. This simple question holds so much more weight to it in today’s dating world, where commitment and long-term relationships, in general, are often uncommon. He admits that he’s “never gonna love another like you”, making that the reason they should make their relationship official.
The song is synth-heavy with strong percussion, making it a healthy mix of pop and R&B. Sam Dew’s pure and effective falsetto vocals top off the track and give it a light-hearted feel. Though the lyrics may be repetitive, the feel of them is constantly evolving. The emotion behind the vocals and the lyrics builds until it finally reaches its peak during the bridge.
I have to admit when I first heard the song I had no idea who had written it. However, after doing a Red Hearse deep dive on Google and learning that Jack Antonoff was one-third of the song’s creation, everything started to make sense. Jack Antonoff has always been a favorite of mine. The music he creates is always so electric and emotional even with0ut lyrics, which in my opinion is not an easy feat. Because I’ve always been big on lyricism, a song inspiring me even with just the instrumentals and their production is impressive. Jack Antonoff, whether with Taylor Swift, Lorde, or any other artist he has worked with, has always been able to do that for me. His talents combined with the talents of Sam Dew and Sounwave have put out a song that is perfect for long drives and nights at home.
