RCL Post 8: Paradigm Shift Sources

I have decided to go an entirely different route than I had previously considered. I now want to look at how the monetization of video games and interactive media has shifted over the past decade. I will focus on the change from a single-purchase model with some a la carte items to more evolved models designed to extract more profit. These actions have only been able to occur because of how the audience has shifted expectations and desires for these interactive media products over the years. I have listed the sources I have read through so far and descriptions of how I intend to use … Continue reading RCL Post 8: Paradigm Shift Sources

Questions to Ponder: The Vote

I feel as though I was able to learn and grow from both the documentary itself and the discussion held by Schreyer for Women.   Starting with the documentary, I found the conflicted nature of some of the suffragettes to be interesting. The documentary discussed the intersection of minority rights and women’s rights as linked movements. At times, the movements were at odds due to members of each group holding prejudice against the other. At the same time, by working together at points, both movements were able to progress more than if entirely apart. Another interesting aspect of the documentary discussed the mobilization of … Continue reading Questions to Ponder: The Vote

Passion Post 8: Hockey Fights

Hockey is a sport with many quirks. Many of these quirks are obvious. The game is played on a sheet of ice. The players wear blades on boots and carry around sticks. The game revolves around a tiny piece of rubber. All of these make hockey unique to other sports. Hockey possesses another unique quirk. Unlike other sports, you are genuinely allowed to get into a fist fight with the opponent. While I have never been in a hockey fight, I have witnessed my Penguins get into a good few and surprisingly my own teammates as well. For this week, I want … Continue reading Passion Post 8: Hockey Fights

RCL Post 7: TED Talk & Shift Ideas

After doing some perusing, I would say David Christian’s “The History of Our World in 18 Minutes” is my favorite TED Talk. Having not watched too many TED Talks since I was in a middle school club, I do not have many that immediately came to mind. Several things stand out about this talk. The first is the content. It combines science and history to create a single stream of information. The subject is the history of the world, as aptly titled, starting with the big bang and ending with humans tapping into fossil fuels and creating collective thinking through the internet. The speaker … Continue reading RCL Post 7: TED Talk & Shift Ideas

Passion Post 7: Offseason Part II

NHL free agency is sort of like Christmas. It is when your favorite team’s GM goes out and spends way too much money on gifts for you, also known as players that will hopefully make your team better. In this week’s post, I want to talk about what makes the most purely business aspect of hockey so interesting.  To start, a brief description of how hockey contracts work may be beneficial. Players enter the league on what is known as an entry-level deal, which comes with a lower salary and restricted free agency looming at the end. Restricted free agency gives the … Continue reading Passion Post 7: Offseason Part II

RCL Post 6: Speech Reflection

From the in-class breakout rooms, I learned a lot about how my performance went. These revelations came both from my fellow students and from a simple re-watch of my own presentation. Starting with the peer feedback, the presentation seemingly went fairly well. One thing that came up several times was how I organized the presentation. I utilized minimalistic slides that served to provide a visual aide and signal what rhetorical aspect I was delving into. Another aspect that was well-received was how I presented myself. The hand gestures and flow were well-received. The piece of positive feedback I was most happy to receive was … Continue reading RCL Post 6: Speech Reflection

Passion Post 6: Offseason Part I

With the NHL season ended, the most exciting part of the hockey year has honestly just begun. Last week, the NHL Entry Draft took place, and the free agency period began soon after. My next two posts will briefly highlight what I find so fascinating about this time for hockey fans.  In order for me to dive into these aspects of the NHL, I need to first take you back around six years. Each year, EA Sports releases a new iteration of the popular NHL video game series. Around NHL 14, I developed a slight addiction to the General Manager mode of the game. In this mode, the … Continue reading Passion Post 6: Offseason Part I
