Vlog: Character Design

http://https://youtu.be/RnsAFGdmqC8

In this video, I talk about the artist’s perspective on character design for video games and giving a time lapse video on a recently developed character I had to create for the table top role play game dnd (dungeons and dragons). Creating characters for dnd is very similar to establishing attributes for a video game character since every character made is usually extremely detailed. The character has a background, origin, flaws and bonds, traits, mottos, appearance, etc. It even goes as far as to label what battle style each character uses and therefore the appearance will change according to the profession or class the character is.

Miki is the name of the character I’ve created, a tabaxi (cat) druid of the stars. She’s part of the current campaign my friends are running surrounding the idea of pirates and exploration. The premise of her story is that she joins up with a new pirate crew after years of healing from a traumatic end to being a navigator for a group that quickly became family to her. Miki’s main personality trait is that she’s a very bubbly and peppy go-getter as overcompensation for crippling anxiety. Since she’s starring as the navigator, her starry bandana not only showcases an attribute of her class but also manifests the association the player will have with her character.
