The Psychology of Fear

I remember learning about the psychology of fear briefly in high school and I found it to be so interesting and something I wanted to learn about in college. Fear is such a powerful human emotion. It is felt quite often by people… probably more often than you think. Fear alerts our minds and our bodies to danger. It can be divided into two stages: biochemical and emotional which are universal and individualized responses. The biochemical reaction is the way our bodies respond to fear. Our reactions include sweating, increased heart rate, and high adrenaline levels. The way we...

USA Today Editorial: Concealed Carry vs. Colleges

Imagine going to a college where guns are allowed on campus.  It might seem very unlikely that such dangerous weapons would be allowed around learning institutions but in certain states being armed with a gun is allowed. At the University of Colorado, guns were kept off campus for 136 years until a couple students challenged the ban on guns and won their argument in 2008. I’ve decided that I want to write my paper on John F. Kennedy’s Civil Rights Address. I knew I wanted to write about one of John F. Kennedy’s speeches because he was such a powerful speaker. He spoke with great words and delivered his speeches so well with such appropriate language and excellent tone. I especially liked this speech of his in particular because it is very significant to America. Kennedy’s words in this speech are so compelling and so important to American society. Kennedy’s speech consisted of certain issues which affected this nation greatly....

When republic candidate, Mitt Romney spoke in front of his campaign donors, very surprising words came out of his mouth that will not be forgotten about. Romney stated that 47% of American citizens are dependent upon the government and pay no income tax. Although this was a very bold statement to say, it is believable to me that Romney would say such a thing. I feel as though Democratic candidates would not talk about nearly half of Americans the way Romney did. Democratic candidates tend to take a different stance when talking about Americans. It would have been really shocking to hear...

The Psychology of Beauty

I was sitting in my Developmental Psychology class last week when my professor made a very interesting point during a discussion concerning neoteny. She stated that people want to look more like babies. At first that sounded very strange but after thinking about some more I realized that there was truth behind that statement. Women who have big eyes, round cheeks, small chins, large curved foreheads, tiny noses, and rounded faces are seen as being attractive. Those features are baby-like. Barbie, for example appears to be very juvenile despite her unbelievable body proportions. Another...
