Response to “The Rhetoric of Images”

Posted by on Nov 30, 2012 in RCL | 0 comments

I believe that a picture can be interpreted many different ways. It depends on who you are and what experiences you’ve had in your past. When I think of the image of the burning World Trade Center on September 11th, I think of the families of those who worked inside the towers, people frantically trying to get away from the terrible scene, chaos breaking out, and sadness across the country. These images allow me to interpret what I think is happening in my own way. I only think about what is happening the moment the image was captured, not what might’ve happened before or after....

The Best Is Yet To Come

While millions of people tuned in to watch a speech so important to our country, I did as well. My eyes were glued to the TV screen during last night’s acceptance speech by president Barack Obama. I found his speech to be so powerful and inspirational. He spoke on a level that every American can understand and spoke words that every American can relate to. It didn’t seem at all rehearsed or scripted which is the vibe I got whenever Mitt Romney spoke. It actually seemed so genuine that I almost started tearing up. Last night, Obama addressed issues that have been weighing on...

TED Talk Ideas

I chose to write about how gender stereotypes have changed over time for my paradigm shift paper. I approached this topic by comparing modern gender stereotypes to gender stereotypes of the 19th century. I don’t really know much about TED talks but here are a few points that stood out to me that I could speak about from my paper: The difference in how men and women were viewed by society in the 19th century and in modern times. In the past, men were seen as strong, dominant, wise figures while women were viewed as submissive, dependent, and weak. I noticed that men held very positive...

Response To The Debate

Once again, president Barack Obama and Mitt Romney went at it in another debate this past Tuesday. I wasn’t at all surprised at the behavior that both candidates displayed. At one point that evening, the debate focused on a very important issue, the attack that resulted in the death of the US ambassador to Libya. President Obama’s thoughts on this attack brought on a heated argument between the candidates which occurred when the moderator asked the president if Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State responsible for the failures which then led to the death of the ambassador and a...

Vice Presidential Debate Response

The debate turned out to be a lot like I expected it to be. I noticed a lot of arguing going on between both Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. And of course, a lot of interruptions went on during the entire debate. When the debate started I was just waiting for the two of them to start attacking each other and needless to say, it didn’t take them too long before they started to. At the very beginning I noticed that Biden used the term “malarkey” to criticize Mitt Romney and he used it a few other times after that if I can recall correctly. It was quite interesting to hear the different terms...

Response to The Feed The Children Commercial

Posted by on Oct 3, 2012 in RCL | 0 comments

The rhetorical appeal, pathos is common in commercials but the one that stood out to me the most recently is the Feed The Children commercial. The Feed The Children Program seeks out viewers who will donate money to and/or sponsor malnourished children. I constantly see this commercial as I’m watching TV and it’s almost too difficult to watch because it sends out such a strong message. This advertisement shows the emotional argument of children who live in poverty without adequate nutrition needing the viewers’ donations. This approach is used to try to grab the sympathy of...
